After waiting 80 minutes I got a note from the restaurant that the order wouldn't be ready for an additional 90 minutes, because their driver did not arrive until 4:30PM. If you need delivery, use someone else.

New management has taken over. We actually had one of the new managers come up and hold a conversation with us. A first for as many times as we have been there. Their happy hour menu is suppose to get a new overhaul, so we can't wait to go back and see what is in store. Their pricing is reasonable and the service is always fast. Food is not bad either.

This is a great place if you want quality fresh sashimi. I came right when Happy Hour just open for my lunch break. It is really nice and cozy. The happy hour menu was not much but a few did caught my eye. $1 Oysters was not exactly the freshest taste and I think they should sit in some ice cubes when serve because it wasn't cold either. The sauce was yummy. So far no tummy itch on this so I'm okay. I tried their Scallop Handroll off their Happy Hour. The scallop is super fresh and was in whole pieces. Very good! I order the Tuna Sashimi Appetizer with some steam rice since I didn't need to get the meal set. The tuna was really fresh and chunky. The red was really vibrant and tasty. This was a huge plus. I also order the fried California Roll.. for $3 it was totally worth it. The sauce was great with it and had the little flakes that moves! Overall, I am a happy customer and will be returning soon. FYI Don't park in the parking lot...

Mikado is a gem restaurant in the 16th St/Potrero/Bryant area. If you're shopping at the Safeway complex here across the street or 1-3 blocks away from the SPCA, there is no real restaurant(not including sandwich places/fast food places) WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE to eat fine restaurant food like at Mikado. I was served with 4 to 5 star friendly professional service all 4 times I've come here. All 4 times I came here, it was for lunch on a weekday. I'm not experimental and don't eat things like sashimi. I stick to sushi/tempura/teriyaki. I also have never ordered for delivery from them - I actually go there to the restaurant. The last time I went there, I came in with a friend after 12 noon on a weekday and there were only 2 or 3 tables being served. It was as usual a very small, clean and quiet restaurant. My friend is frugal about spending out to eat, but for about the same amount of $$'s she'd spend at a McD's nearby, Mikado's was a better deal, so I steered her here. I shared with my friend and we got their lunch special which was a great deal of $12 for a bento combo with 3 items and the california sushi/beef teriyaki/shrimp tempura was fresh and served quickly. My friend doesn't really even like other ethnic food except her own or American, but even she liked the quality freshness of the food and the fact that the tempura and teriyaki were cooked excellently. I had already eaten earlier elsewhere so one order for both of us was fine, otherwise if you're 2 HUNGRY people, then get your own separate orders. There are other restaurants next to the Safeway complex, but for the same price (or a little more $'s) you pay at these other places, this is the BEST restaurant to go to for fine food & good service while shopping or in this area, especially for lunch time.

This place gets a kinda bad rap, in my opinion. The fish is actually pretty high quality if you know what to order. Admittedly, the rolls are just OK, but if you're eating rolls you don't know jack about sushi anyway! $3 large sake at Happy Hour is the bomb. That is all.

2 words--Mikado delivery!!! Always fresh amazing sushi delivered right to my door. They are fast and bring quality. I have also dined in their location and experienced just as good of service. Thank you!

Went back again after giving it a 1 star review to see if any thing has changed. Same bad service. Like before on my last review, I ordered a charashi sushi and fried soft-shelled crab. Also asked for extra salad dressing and extra wasabi. Well, this time I did get dressing but not extra and again no wasabi. I have gone to this place before and will not give it another chance. I only go here because it's close to work and has plenty of street parking because it's convenient even though their raw fish is pretty tasteless. It's sad when you have to use soy sauce and wasabi to make your raw fish have some flavor. Now I drive to the Richmond area to get my Japanese food. More expensive and farther away but at least you will get your correct order and the fish fresher and tastier.

My coworkers and I have been getting take out from this place for months because it's conveniently-close and prepares food quickly. Prices also are quite reasonable. I typically get a donburi bowl with teriyaki beef or katsu chicken. The bowls include miso soup and a small side salad. For the salad, I wish they cut up the lettuce a bit more instead of keeping it in large chunks (American-style). Other than that, it's fine with its sweet Thousand Island-like dressing. The miso soup is also good. (It's hard to mess up miso soup) The donburi bowl is the perfect amount of food for me for lunch. The taste/quality is about average for a Japanese restaurant, which typically is already pretty-high quality compared to most other restaurants. Overall, it's good lunch food, and we plan to continue coming here regularly.

I have had definitely mixed experiences with Mikado. Let's start with the positives: Good stuff: (5 stars) Food is yummy, especially the CA roll. Price is completely unrivaled. Basically, the sushi is good and it's cheap. The people who work there are very nice and friendly. All this makes my heart break when I have to mention the bad stuff. Bad stuff: (1 star) Last time that I picked up food, it was over an hour later than they had promised and it was put together very carelessly. The rolls were a mess, sashimi was small and butchered a bit, and again, it took so long that when I went to pick up the food (at the time it was supposed to be ready), some people came in to eat there and they were leaving when I finally got the food. I am giving them another chance, but so saddened by my most recent experience.

I love lunch specials. I ordered the bento box with 2 items: the saba shioyaki and shrimp & veggie tempura. I am not a tempura type of person. In fact, I know it has been well over a year since the last time I ate tempura, and even then, I think it was tempura ice cream. The reason why I ordered it was because the guy at the table adjacent from us was eating tempura and the batter looked light and not too crazy. I loved it. The batter was light, so I didn't feel overwhelmed with grease. The saba shioyaki was slightly undercooked in the middle, but at least, it is better than being overcooked. The service was very accommodating. I ordered the saba, and at first, they brought out salmon, and I notified the server of the error and they quickly remediated the issue. They also provided me with an ETA of how long it takes to cook the fish. That was very thoughtful. The restaurant was clean, the bento was affordable, the food was fresh, and the staff was friendly.

I can't be the only one who walked into Mikado purely out of the close proximity to 24 hour fitness. I get these savage hunger pangs after i workout and the thought of sushi was perfect! It's not a place i'd specifically go out of my way for. It's a japanese restaurant you go to when you want fast, easy, and no hassle sushi. Their dinner bento combo comes in either a 2 item or 3 item combination. I ordered the salmon teriyaki and spicy tuna roll for $11.95. The spicy tuna was good but i'd probably switch out the salmon next time!

This place is the worst sushi in town. I got bones in my sake sashimi, BONES. in all my years of eating sushi, i've never had bones. when i complained about bones the female sushi chef said that it happens sometimes and thats just how it is. I was appalled, I demanded a new sake sashimi and I demanded not to pay for it, they gave me a new order, but made me pay for both. I vowed to never come back. So i go back, horrible service waiting to sit, FILTHY TABLES, in fact FILTHY EVERYTHING. straight up sticky shit all over everything, yea, its one of those sushi places where they never really clean. i ordered an orange juice, and, they gave me a glass of that really cheap brownish orange juice that is just expired as all hell. the kind you get at a gas station or corner liquor store. lets see what else, oh, they only had the low sodium soy sauce at my table, when i asked for the other one they looked at me like im crazy, the problem with this place is that it is family run by a lazy dirty family with general all around low standards, i've been giving this place a chance about once a year for the past 7 or 8 years and it still hasnt performed, i dont think it ever will. the service is an absolute joke, like, I walked in, stood around, waited to be seated NOONE ELSE SITTING DOWN IN THE PLACE, the hostess is on the phone, i can hear her "no way, wow! really, uh-uhhh!!" talking to her friend or something. eventually she gets off the phone, and sits us at the dirtiest table with no light above it. I would really like to see this place disappear and a new, better business pop up in its place. -jeff

Happy Hour~ Monday to Saturday 4-6pm All beverages: 50% off Appetizers: $2.75 & up Asahi ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ): $1.75 for small. $2.75 for large. They also serve Kirin and Sapporo at the same prices! Awesome!! Salmon Lady Fingers ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ): $3.25. Deep fried salmon sticks with mayo-based dipping sauce. These lady fingers were piping hot with nice hearty pieces of salmon. Yum! Sushi Rolls ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ): $2.75-$3.25. 1:Dynamite (deep fried spicy yellow tail) - Crunchy, spicy, good! 2:Viper (deep fried spicy tuna) - Also crunchy, spicy, good! 3:Bagel (salmon & cream cheese) - not a big fan of cream cheese in sushi rolls. 4:Spicy yellowtail (yellowtail with hot sauce & jalapenos) - good but too spicy! Their happy hour menu is quite extensive and the items are super affordable. The sushi rolls, however, are definitely not bang for the buck. Cheap and tasty. But at quarter size, the rolls disappeared quickly and did not stick to our stomachs.

Fishy. Hard time deciding so I asked the host for his opinion. Ocean Roll all the way. Done. Crab and seaweed salad rolled and topped with fresh assorted fish. Also known as a sure thing. Quality was certainly there but so was a high price. Twelve bucks for eight pieces of goodness was pushing it. There was a lot of fish. But not that much. Three stars is standard when the food is good and the service pleasant. Yes on both accounts. Cost keeps them at three.

Mikado is fairly busy around lunch time (likely due to the SOMA start-up scene) but not busy at all around dinner time. I like this spot for both lunch and dinner. The prices are super reasonable - tons of fancy rolls for under $10. They also have a pretty good sake selection though they might try to up-sell you to a more expensive, "newer" bottle. In addition to sushi rolls, they also have lots of teriyaki, udon, tempura, appetizer, etc options. This location works well for me and I'm often in need of my sushi fix!

3.5 stars I stopped by here with a friend on a whim on the way to a different sushi restaurant. Looks are most certainly deceiving. Looks small and hole in the wall-y from the outside. It's bigger on the inside! (Any Whovians?) Well, it's longer anyway. It's actually decent sized, but there aren't a lot of big tables, so larger parties beware. It's pretty clean and I love how they have lots of polaroids stuck on the wall by the door. It gives off a friendly and home-y feel. The staff are pretty attentive and gave us hot tea as soon as we sat down since it was such a cold day. The place wasn't especially busy that night, but the staff kept pushing us to order even though we did not sit down for long and it was only around 6ish. We ordered the 12 pc assorted sashimi, a beef sukiyaki, and one more item that I can't remember for the life of me. They gave us salad that was soaked in dressing. The veggies still had plenty of water on them too. At least we know it was just washed. The sashimi was okay. Some pieces were fresher than others. I liked the hamachi, but didn't really like the salmon. The beef sukiyaki was pretty sweet because they used quite a bit of onions. I did like how they were very generous the portion size of the sukiyaki and the amount of beef and other things in the broth. Maybe I'll come back. It would be cute to be on that wall with all the polaroids.

Small little place--at least on the outside. Once you're in, the place is pretty average-sized and clean. I guess I came in around the time they were closing for lunch. As a result, maybe 10-15 minutes in we were rushed with the check, final orders, and warning that they're closing out. I felt like this was a bit unnecessary. Although slightly apologetic after some attitude, I still grant this place 3 instead of the 3.5 for their food. Nigiri was great, wasn't the best I ever had, but it was decent. Just what you'd expect from a place owned by a Japanese place owned by Chinese people, am I right? I just don't think that's any way to do business. If I owned a restaurant and people came in wanting food, they'll get what they get until they're all dined out. Closing for lunch or not, why not just finish the last party and leave them happy?

(See pic) More of 3.3 stars. 2 item lunch combo for $9.95. Okay Chinese style Japanese food (I had chicken and fish) and it's so much food that I have some home.

Worst experience ever! I started working around the corner from this place and love japanese food so I decided to try it. I walk in and all the servers just stared at me.. finally one came from the back and seated me. He poured my tea, which had a dead fruit fly in it. That triggered me to tell them to make my order to go. I get back to work and open my order, they gave me a beef teriyaki egg bowl which I assume was the don buri but was definitely not tasteful and not worth my money! A couple of months later I decided to give the placve one more try. I walk in and there is no one in the restaurant except for a lady sleeping on the table. She looks up at me and goes back to sleep without even letting me know they were closed. Finally, I yelled 'Are you open?' and someone from the back shouted that they open at 4pm.. When I looked at the clock it was 3:58.. HORRIBLE SERVICE!!! I will never go back to this restaurant again.

Came here for happy hour one random Tuesday. The prices are decent and you get a lot of food for the price, but the quality of the food is so-so. It's also a bit weird hearing your servers speak Cantonese when you think you're in a Japanese restaurant...just sayin.

This is my go-to spot when I want sushi and Japanese delivery. Sure, I was a little nervous when I order sushi through grubhub for the first time, but it all worked out fine and has ever since. I always worry with delivery that businesses will rip me off by giving me smaller portions, poorly prepared, and/or bad quality food. However, Mikado Sushi always delivers. My orders always come nicely packed and arrive timely (under one hour to the Nob Hill area). The sashimi and nigiri are always nicely sliced and fresh. The rolls are neat and aren't overwhelmed with rice. I also risk ordering tempura and each time they arrive crispy. The katsu donburi, which came in a bowl-shaped take-out container (I appreciate when businesses use the right container for the job), comes loaded with toppings of pickled ginger, seaweed, and other pickled veggies. It's nice to know they don't skimp out on the small stuff even for delivery. I've had Japanese delivered from other places under the same budget and so far Mikado is the best.

The phrase "the price is right" really applies here. This is not the best sushi I've ever had, by a long shot. But the prices are super reasonable and the sushi is pretty good. Parking is easy and you're close to Potrero Center if you have errands to run before or after your meal. They also offer super fast delivery.

Major props for the staff being friendly and willing to serve 8 people 30 minutes before closing on a Friday night and not having any attitude about it, with attentive service overall, although surprisingly we had to actually ask for the check at the end! (I would have thought they were itching to kick us out, since it was way past their closing time by the time we finished) Only 3 stars from me only because of the food. I ordered the chirashi bowl - it's usually what I will order at a Japanese restaurant if I'm not in the mood for rolls. I figure it's a good barometer of how their sashimi is and how their sushi rice is. My friends did order the "lover's boat special," which came with some very nice looking sashimi, but my sashimi i thought was poorly hacked and of poor quality and a lot of the fish did not taste very fresh, although the salmon was pretty good relatively speaking. The rice did not have any sushi rice flavoring. No rice vinegar flavor - it basically tasted like plain white rice, and slightly overcooked rice at that. Again, I will say that my friends had other dishes (udon, or rolls) that looked a bit better and they seemed to enjoy their food. Prices seemed really reasonable, and again, the staff overall seemed very friendly, but not intrusive, which was nice. I probably wouldn't choose to come back on my own, but would be willing to give it another shot if someone suggested it again.

The Hawaiian Poki is my favorite! They make it just the way I like it...with a ton of onions and spicy! The sushi rolls are okay to me, nothing extraordinary but still very tasty and fresh. I like to come here after I work out at 24 hour fitness and order something low card and low fat like the Hawaiian Poki. Maybe i'll venture out here one day and try something new but for now, the poki is worth the drive!

As I mentioned in my previous review, after more attempts I'd update my review. UPDATE: I'd actually like to bring my rating down to two stars, but I won't because that's mean. The reason I'd like to bring it down is because the service is bad.. Sorry Mikado...

Ordered food for delivery for the first time from Mikado It took them about 50 mins to deliver to soma Assorted Sashimi Dinner: 4/5 12 pcs of hamachi, maguro, sake and albacor tuna. Pretty fresh.. Salmon Teriyaki Dinner: 3/5 Two thin slices of salmon steak..a little bland and overcooked. Dynamite roll: 2/5 I would say skip anything fried if you are ordering delivery...by the time it gets to you it is a bit too soggy Spicy scallop roll: too much rice..not enough filling Steamed spinach: 3/5 would have been a nice healthy side except it was drenched in a peanut dressing Overall 3 stars but one extra star for the convenience factor with delivery option.

I had to go to nearby Sports Basement and passed by this restaurant. My friend was hungry and we saw two restaurants-1 Chinese and 1 Japanese. We thought that the Japanese one looked better. After shopping at Sports Basement, our cashier recommended Mikado Sushi to us! She said, 6 and good for Mikado $ and 10 for $$$ blowfish. I am glad she gave me the extra push to try the place out. Technically, I am not sure why the Yelp information page says it's in the Mission. It's really across the side street/Bryant in Potrero Hill by the Potrero Hill Shopping Center (Petco, Safeway, Ross) @ 16th. We ordered a sushi boat ($15.95 one with chicken teriyaki and fried veggies) and the Sunny and Spider Row. The total for all three came to about $40 before tips. The food was yummy and the prices are reasonable. It was quiet and clean. The service was fast and friendly. It is a neighborhood restaurant that I would go back to even though it isn't the greatest sushi restaurant I've been to, it is comfortable and "comfort" food. They have a TV playing Cantonese/Jade Channel programming by the bar and the staff speaks Chinese. There is one bathroom shared for women and men. Plus points for taking credit card. MUNI bus lines 33 Stanyan, 22 Fillmore, 9L Bayshore and 9 Bayshore gets here. BART @ 16th and Mission is a close 12 minute walk away.

The sushi and food is pretty average, but it's consistent and a good regular spot for sush. The desert options are lacking and could use at least a restaurant default of chocolate moose. We ordered cheesecake and it came to us frozen. Had to wait ten minutes for it to thaw and it was embarrassing watching my friend attempt to saw his in half with his fork as it cut around the table like a hockey puck. The server, Sumi, was outstanding as always and smiling with great service every time we visit.

I've been coming to this restaurant off and on for the past few years. Usually I come when I am attending a performance at around the Civic Center since this place is not too far of a drive from there. The prices here are pretty decent. I ordered a 12-piece sashimi combo which was $16.95 and consisted of four types of fish. It was decent, though it included the darker type of white tuna which I wasn't a fan of (I assume that's what it was and not yellowtail which I love but depends on the portion they serve). They did include the white tuna that is purely white in color, which I love and seemingly not served everywhere. Their special spicy roll ($7.95, cut into six pieces) was pretty good also. Overall the service is good. There is one waitress that I felt could have been friendlier (based on this and past visit experiences), but at least she wasn't my primary one during this past week's dinner.

Their staff is absolutely horrible. The receptionist who answers their phone literally hangs up on your face without saying bye and cuts you off mid-sentence. When I asked to speak with their manager, she just lied to me saying that he/ she is not available and won't be there till midnight, so guess who answers the phone the next time I call? The manager! Which I thought was bullshit because she did not seem to give a damn when I wanted to talk to her about how I was not even allowed to place an order since she kept hanging up mid-sentence. They are a bunch of un-educated jackass, so I will never recommend eating somewhere where you'd get the worst service.

Mikado is a short walk from my work, and I will probably return some day, but my first time here was pretty hit and miss. Nice modern decor and a nice Asian lady to greet and seat me. I ordered a three item bento lunch box with deep fried tofu, chicken teriyaki and gyoza ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ). Everything came out from the kitchen very fast starting with a cup of hot tea. It's not what I expected that it tasted more like Chinese tea than Japanese tea, but that's understandable considering most of the restaurant's staff here speaks Cantonese. The miso soup was piping hot, well-seasoned and not too salty with the usual bits of tofu and seaweed on the bottom. I had mixed opinions on the contents of the bento though. I would have liked a softer rice. What they serve is a very firm rice. The generic mixed green salad mix was fresh and crispy and had just enough dressing on it. The chicken teriyaki portion was big with tender chunks of grilled thigh meat, sweet teriyaki sauce and a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Of my three choices I liked it the most. The deep fried tofu were soft tofu squares fried up in tempura batter. Only the tops were crispy though as half of each square was submerged in a soy-type sauce turning the crispy batter into mush. The gyoza had a nice and thin skin and was browned on one side much like a potsticker. The centers were hollow though as each one only had a small pasting of a pork and cabbage filling. I liked the taste; I just wished they had filled these dumplings a bit more. The service was excellent. Maybe 3.5 stars overall.

This place was the perfect spot to get a snack after unloading our Uhaul down the street. On a Thursday before 6 it was very quiet and we were one of two tables being waited on. The appetizers were great, I especially liked the V salad and the fish liver (I believe it's ankimo). The flavors were excellent and the atmosphere was perfectly serene.

My roommate and I live in SoMa and wanted sushi for dinner, but didn't want to leave the house. We decided to give Mikado delivery a try and we were not disappointed! I ordered a spicy tuna roll and the amigo lover roll. The spicy tuna roll is substantial in size--much larger than what I would typically expect. The amigo lover roll is spicy, flavorful and just what I had been craving. Delivery literally takes about 18 minutes from the time I order to the time it's at my door. We've ordered delivery from Mikado once a week since we tried it and are so happy with it! Great quality for a reasonable price.

I had the chef's choice sashimi. It was pretty good. All of my party were very happy with their selections: one had a few rolls, another had a grilled (teriyaki?) salmon and another a bento box. The wait staff was very courteous, attentive and helpful. This is near my work and will probably become our go-to Japanese place for lunch. Also, the first time here I forgot my phone at the table. I came back hours later and they had kept it safe for me. I appreciated how much they wanted to make sure it was truly my phone before letting me walk away with it. Honest, caring, thanks Mikado!

The food here was all right, but the service needs some definite improvement. I had the bento box with tonkatsu and spicy tuna, and it was fine. It also came with miso soup and salad. The server messed up the order twice! The box she originally served had tempura instead of tonkatsu. Also, my friend's box had tonkatsu but it was supposed to be chicken katsu. I had also ordered the edamame to use the yelp check in deal (which i specified when ordering), but got charged at the end! When i pointed that out, she said the yelp size was different so i should have shown her the app before. She should have told me that in the beginning when i mentioned it, if that was the case - otherwise i wouldn't have ordered it It would be beneficial for them to repeat the orders before leaving the table, clearly. Even though i work close by and this is a convenient location, I do not expect to be returning here anytime soon. I definitely agree with other reviewers that they do not get the little things right, which adds up to a not-great experience in the end.

  • Kazu O.

This is a business that can't get the little things right. You get a udon to-go, and they put it in the same type of container that they put their rice bowls in, which means it's completely leaky. They don't give you a warning about this. They at least put it in a plastic bag, but they don't even bother to tie the bag up. Is that really so hard? I've also had issues ordering from them via Eat24. I've had them cancel my order because they were closing early, and have had them delay my order because they claim to not be open yet (though my pickup time was supposed to be 30 minutes after they were supposed to be open). This has become an absolute last-resort type of place, when I really can't think of anything else to eat...

We came here for lunch and I got a bento box (2 items for $10 or 3 items for $12, which I think is a good deal)! food was good, the tempura was abit no flavor, even dipping in the tempura sauce, didn't make a different (wouldn't order this item next time), Spicy tuna roll was very good, I enjoyed it, and Spicy garlic chicken was also good! The batter for the chicken was crunchy, and the sauce was perfect for my tasting. It also comes with Miso Soup & Salad, was were also good. My partner got Sashimi and a hand roll, which he really enjoyed, and said the fish was fresh. My partner's sister ordered two special roll, and it didn't look like the picture (the picture had ugani, while her roll didnt, again she ordered from the lunch menu, probably that's why) and said she didn't enjoy it. Its a nice place to get lunch. Cheaper than I love Terayaki in the Potrero plaza. We would come here again for lunch.

Meh Japanese place. The starter salad had some kind of dressing that definitely isn't Japanese. More like one of those off brand dressings you buy at Safeway for the company picnic that is charitably called "Creamy." Oyaku Don wasn't great, I don't feel great a few hours after eating it. Might have been the egg, but the chicken was pretty gamy. I would describe it as more connective tissue than protein. I'm sure something a bit more traditional Japanese would be better here (Bento Box, Sushi). My advice is this isn't the place to stray from the tried and true favorites. Would have been a 3-star, if not for the upset stomach.

Terrible experience! I work around the corner and wanted a bento box lunch special. I ordered the veg tempura and an avocado cucumber roll...which I was told I would be charged $1.50 MORE for. More money for NO fish? The manager was super rude and so was the server...so I walked out and will never be back. There is way too much good sushi and friendly service in this city to waste your time and money at Mikado.

Literally ran by a bunch of dumbasses. It took them a whole hour for them to realize the outer sunset is TOO far for delivery. And they wouldn't have said anything until I called. The first time Someone said my food should be there soon. The second time a lady hung up on me. The third time the "manager" said we are both suffering a loss because they're also wasting food. Horrible customer service, didn't even offer a coupon of free something. Ty grub hub for at least compensating me even though it wasn't their fault.

Horrible service, There food was alright, I give the food a rating of 5/10. My husband & I ordered delivery & the man came 2 hours later & had the nerve to ask for a tip. He has some nerve! Very rude man. & started cussing because we didn't give him a tip.

Ambiance was good, service was fast, and rolls were good. Hidden away in an area with little parking around, but i think it's worth a try especially if you're in the neighborhood and want something low key!

I'm so glad my introduced me to Mikado this Friday.. I had the bento box dinner for 12$ for two items. 1-Barbecue chicken and a bowl of white rice, small garden salad,6 delicious pieces of California Rolls.. I'd definitely recommend it to my family and friends..

The sushi itself is pretty good but I dont like how they package it for delivery. They try to put as much sushi as possible in a tiny little box.

I work near here and come here for lunch once a week or so. I don't order raw here but they have good cooked options, had a delicious pork donburi . Service is prompt and no frills, which is just fine for a quick lunch during the work day.

The Sake Salmon Entree's texture was very nice, and was very fresh. The chicken teriyaki was good as well, although you might want to ask for more sauce.

I still haven't received my order I ordered an hour an a half ago. I was given a 40-55 minute delivery estimate. It is a large order, but they knew that when they confirmed my order. I called 25 minutes ago (an hour and five minutes after I placed my order) to ask where it was and they told me the driver left a few minutes earlier. I called again just now and they said it would be 10 more minutes. I asked why I was told it would be here in a few minutes if that wasn't true. She got very defensive saying she didn't know what route he took, etc. I told her I just wanted them to be upfront about how long it would actually be. She refused to apologize. I don't care how good the food is. I will never order from them again. It's taking twice as long as the delivery estimate.

Stumbled upon this place as the BF and I were walking back to the 16th St Mission Station for BART. I ordered the Chirashi and the bf got the Sushi Dinner. The prices were reasonable: under $15 and the food was not bad. The service was great and everyone was real friendly. We got seated right away on a Sunday night as walk-ins, so that's a plus. I'd come back here if I happen to be on this part of town again.

Not sure why this place isn't rated higher! Had some of the best katsu-don here, and I've had some good ones both in Hawaii and Japan! The serving size was really generous and the flavor profile was perfectly sweet and salty. Came with takuan and tsukemono, too, which were very welcome! The service was also super quick and servers were really nice! The waitress brought us extra oranges after we finished eating because she saw me drop mine! Prices were also really reasonable and the check in deal was super awesome. I'd highly recommend this place!

I've been here 2 times. One with friends and the other for a random lunch stop. Now for the friends, I don't remember what we ordered since it was so long ago. As for the lunch, I was running for errands and had gotten hungry. So since I love japanese, I thought I'd get myself a salmon teriyaki bento to go. About $10 is usually the price for a bento plus the soup, so I'm not complaining. As I finally got home, I was ready to indulge in my food. It was your typical bento; your choice of meat (in my case, fish), salad, rice, and Cali roll. Rice and roll were simple, but still good. In my personal opinion, I wish there was more salad. Only bcus I always devour that first! (I love salad.) as for the salmon, it had an okay texture. It had the obvious taste of teriyaki but the salmon seemed a bit overlooked. But although the fish was a little overdone, the bento, overall, was still satisfying for an occasional lunch. Surprisingly made me full!

The food is a bit mediocre but it's reasonably priced and fast. + staff is nice +/- unagi is okay. sometimes there is too much sauce. you aren't given much unagi...but you are given a lot of rice.

3.8 -Quick service -$12 bento box. very reasonable pricing -yummy Spicy Tuna Roll -Brown rice option -the meat was too salty for my taste but my coworker thought it was perfect. would not get the short ribs again -convenient location

Horrible food taste old fish taste and bad customer service they didn't want to give me the California roll that came when you spend $25 or more without me asking and they still got a attitude about giving it couldn't even eat All the food because I started feeling sick midway thru ... Will never eat here again ...

Like they previously said... I truly believe they do an excellent job with their food.. I particularly like the "bento box with two items" .. I've been eating at this place for 15 years and I never never never never had any problems with my dishes... They people who works here are on the nicer side since a started eating at this place.. After finishing my workout at gym , I know Where to fill full but not blooded.. I normally Request de dressing on the side so I can eat the way I want it.. They always fulfill my requests..

went here last night for dinner. its chinese owned and don't be surprised by the outside. The interior is actually very nice and cosy. They have happy hour from 4-6 every day. I got Sunset strip roll sans ponzu sauce. I asked for real crab whch they can sub out for an extra $3. However, I'm not sure if the hostess wans't attentive or what but she asked me twice to repeat what I wanted and I still ended up getting fake crab meat. taste wise it was fine though but that was annoying...

I just don't know where anybody else ate before this sushi restaurant, but my experience at this place was very disappointed. The food that I ordered was a bento box, and a caterpillar roll. You have to be a very bad chef if your easiest roll to make ,sucks so much. The teriyaki chicken was tasteless, the tempura so heavy on batter and not season at all.

    (1)
  • Mark A.

it's exactly what it looks like. it's decently tasty, affordable, and has friendly service. i've only done takeout here, but they really have the packaging down, always making sure to separate everything that should be separated, putting extra wrapping on things when necessary, etc.

Very good menu, especially since I'm a vegetarian ! Nice environment, friendly and fast service (although we got there right at opening time so only five of us in whole place when we ordered, and yet one of the dishes was left out ! Luckily we were filled with our other orders). We had the bento box lunches, about $12 for three items (no doubling up, though!) and includes white rice, green salad and miso soup. Good variety of choices - I had the avocado roll (6 in order), veggie pot stickers (4 in order), and veggie tempura. I'd skip the tempura next time - it was a combo of yam, eggplant, broccoli and zucchini, and the batter was mediocre. Last time I had tempura was in Japan (not to brag ...) and I think my expectations are now destroyed for tempura here in the states! The iced tea was lightly sweetened and not "Lipton" which was a refreshing addition to the meal. All in all I will be happy to go back, and try some other "roll" options which are veggie based. I left happy and full !!

Stay away from the chirashi. Sashimi are razor thin and it wasn't all fish. There were egg pieces in there that takes away from the real estate that would be fish. Not a great value. On the other hand, the 2 or 3 item bento box combo is a godsend in terms of quantity. $10 or $12 and you get to choose from about 12 items. It comes with miso soup and salad. Now that's a bargain. In terms of quality, it's your typical items you would expect. I ordered the salmon shioyaki, chicken teriyaki, and veggie gyoza. I had a great meal. As of this writing, they have a check-in special where if you spend $10, you get a free sake or beer.

Have ordered and ate in at this place MANY times and will go back. Ordered from here at least 2 x's a month while working on Howard Street. Great lunch prices and deals. Their sushi is better than average, but not the best in the City. You get what you pay for. I have been eating sushi since I was 4 so I know good deals/quality when I eat it.

The food is great. I ate during happy hour and I had a large $4 Kirin and a handful of rolls for $3.50 each. The rolls are on the smaller side, but at less than $4 a piece, it's easy to just put in another order.

The spicy and garlic chicken is bomb. Super quick service, lots of seating, and their happy hour menu is awesome - although I haven't made it in for happy yet. Prices are standard. It's a great place if you wanna pop in for a quick bite to eat after the gym because it's right across the street and it's open a little later than a lot of other spots in the area. ~ TheWaterGuy

Hubert Tang gave me a delicious and filling BLAST IN THE MOUTH! Hubert Tang's original sushi rolls are SO HUGE. It's kind of hard to stuff the entire thing in your mouth... but it doesn't stop you from trying because it's so yummy. Mmmmmm (in a sensual tone. I said "sensual"). Ask for extra napkins, because it will be a huge mess on your face if you dare try it. This review has no bias-ness. None-what-so-ever. Just went to middle&high school with him :|

We are true Sushi lovers. So yesterday, me, my husband and baby daughter stopped by this place after leaving the Post Office next door. We ordered a lunch meal, California rolls, beef teriyaki, salad, rice and miso soup. Additionally a side order of spicy tuna rolls. Prior to ordering the waitress was rude and not courteous at all. We overlooked the unruliness because we wanted to eat. When we got our order and headed to have lunch in the park nearby, after getting there, we realize there was no soy sauce, or wasabi. Both are my favorite, I was irritated and so we went back to get both, and they were very reluctantly to give us any. We also noticed there wasn't any spoons, forks, ect. We requested and they said they charge extra. On top of all that, the food wasn''t good at all. This place sucks.

Came here twice and I really love it! The first time I just got two Cut Rolls- salmon and yellowtail. Very fresh and just what I was looking for at the time! During the second time, we were initially seated by the door, but the waitress came over to tell us that a booth opened up and that it was better to sit there! How lovely! The second time I got the 3 item Bento Box!!! I got tonkatsu, california roll, and chef's choice sushi! It comes with miso soup and salad! The katsu was fried perfectly- not too fried and brown and good amount of juice in the pork. The cali roll had a tiny bit more mayo than normal in the crab, but thats ok, it was still delciious. The chefs choice sushi came with a squid, salmon and tuna nigiri! I was very stuffed! The pricing for the bento box is comparable to other places. I would say in the middle range for normal sushi places. $14.95 for the 3 item. Would come again!

I ordered take-out - but placed order at the restaurant. Staff wasn't rude but definitely not friendly. We ordered a fair amount of food but I was shocked at the final price tag. Over $60 bucks - this place doesn't have much frill so I was hoping the food would speak for itself. Nope. The unagi was tough and not very meaty, the rolls were basically all California rolls with whatever on top to make it 'special' - the udon wasn't bad but didn't have much to it and the seaweed was gross. Extremely salty as I was dying of thirst by the end of the meal. Overall much to be desired and won't return. Much better sushi places worth the hefty price tag.

Why is it so difficult to find a good delivery in SOMA? What's a girl gotta do when she is just too lazy to cook on a Sunday night? Mikado is the only spot we have ordered from more than once thus far but it does have its hits and misses. Hits: Spicy Tuna Roll California Roll Smoked Salmon Nigiri Beef Sukiyaki Tonkatsu (This is really just an A-OK) Misses: Saba Nigria Teriyaki Short Ribs Saba Shioyaki Tempura Ramen It's not a place I would go for a sit down dinner but until something better comes along, Mikado Sushi will be our Sunday delivery spot.

My family and I have been coming here for a few years now and it's a great place. The sushi is delicious and they're all about quality AND quantity. Their happy hour menu is extensive and one can't go wrong with rolls/appetizers/drinks ranging from $3-5! Such a great go to spot!

Friend suggest coming here for dinner one night. I just move into the neighbourhood... oh boy, I am glad he recommended it! Mikado serves tasty fresh fish. Well priced and the waitstaff are attentive. The set menus are very generously portioned and we were able to feed 3 with 2 set menus + 1 roll. Unassuming, just a down to earth, well priced sushi joint. Love it.

I needed this! After a stressful couple of weeks from dealing with a bunch of BS at work, this place felt like therapy. Happy Hour is truly Happy Hour when the company is good. And when the never-ending flow of Beer and Sake (half off regular price) is at your disposal, it makes it that much better. I'm typically a Hot Sake drinker but I don't discriminate when it comes to food and libation. So when an array of Cold Sake was waiting at our table, I was ready to dig in. I believe we mostly had Ginjo type of Sake but Ginjo or Daiginjo is all good to me. We had several bottles of Ozeki Taruzake, Kizakure Pure, Ozeki Kataramba and Shiro Sasa. Wow..an array of wonderful flavors from woodsy, cedary, rosy and sweet was indeed quite superb. Now I can hold my liquor, but I was trying to play it cool and not show I was getting a nice buzz. Heck...it was a great buzz. Our waiter was wonderful as she kept making suggestions after suggestions and we all kept nodding yes. Our mugs were never empty with beer as service was exceptional. When the first of two Sushi Boat arrived, it was purely delightful and delicious. All types of sea creatures in their natural form and fresh flavor just waiting for us to devour them. When the Hamachi just melts in your mouth...that, my friend, is a sign of good Sashimi. Now mind you, this is just Happy Hour I'm talking about. But I am eager to return and try what else it has to offer. Next time, I'm bringing the wifey so I won't have to sleep on the couchy.

Classic sushi when you need it and nouveau sushi when you want it. Great service. FRESH fish. I have gone there with a group of 8 and ordered the fantastic boat and gone there on a rainy nights with my main squeeze. I left happy each time. Don't forget to chat up the chef and ask for something just to your liking. This place is the real deal...not some hyped up overpriced sushi place. Check it out!

Mikado Sushi has solid, fresh sushi and excellent service. It became my boyfriend and my favorite spot for a post-workout lunch/protein fix (being across the street from the gym), but we've recently discovered the amazingness that is their happy hour. Appetizers, rolls, and drinks in the happy hour menu are in the ~$3-5 range, so he and I can (and do) effectively cancel out any progress made at the gym for under $12 per person. But since it's fresh, cheap sushi, I only kind of feel bad about it.

Not cheap per se, but it is cheap if you are sushi-ing. Here's all one needs to know: Happy Hour is Mon-Sat 4pm-6pm; all drinks are half off (e.g., large Kirin $2.75); selected small sushi rolls are $2.25 (e.g., spicy salmon roll); selected appetizers $3.25 (e.g., spicy hamachi roll, gyoza, yakitori, agedashi tofu). Still wins! - For appetizers ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ), the agedashi tofu was good - got a second order ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ) later on, the "goma" was an interesting mix of cold spinach and peanut buttery sauce, the seaweed salad was ok. - The dynamite roll ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ) was a fried roll; rice and hamachi with a creamy sauce that overwhelmed everything. - Gyoza ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ) was better than average, salmon roll was basic ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ). - Tempura string beans ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ) was good! - The double hamachi roll ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ) was a request from us since we wanted spicy hamachi. - The tuna poki ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ) had too much sauce and was "wet". - The chicken yakitori ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ) was attractive but each piece was too chunky. - The sunset strip roll ( yelp.com/biz_photos/HyK-… ) was attractively hand-made right then and there, but one has to really like cucumber. The owner is Chinese, and so are the chefs, and it looks like a family-run type of a place. But, their Japanese sushi prowess are definitely not subpar - I'd even ventured to say skilled. They can speak Cantonese and other Chinese dialects (i.e., Mandarin and/or some other). One chef can also speak VNese. The place is not "fancy", no, but it's not noodle-housey either. It is small and could easily be missed driving by, but it's next to a Chinese restaurant. Located close to the corner of Bryant Street and 16th Street. Again, this is by the Potrero Center, so it's easy to get to from the Vermont Street exit off 101, or the Mariposa Street exit off 280.

My buddy and I come here a couple times a month, since it's the nearest sushi place to us, and it's very warm and inviting. All the servers are really nice, and funny. It's not high end sushi, like Fuku in Japantown, but I've never had a bad piece of fish, and it's reasonably priced. I think I'll go now!

I went to this place for lunch because it's pretty close to where I work. And it was really good, especially for the price. I got the Deluxe Sushi lunch, and it came with 6 pieces of California Roll, 7 pieces of various nigiri, miso soup, and a salad. Very pleased.

Definitely not coming back here. Food not that great, on top of the fact that they forgot to put unagi in my fancy roll that I ordered. Made me another roll with the unagi on the house that tasted worse than the first one. Lucky for them they have a good location, otherwise I doubt they would survive as a restaurant.

Don't go for the service. Go for the food. If you want good service, go somewhere else that is more expensive. Had sashimi and nigiri. I was really expecting a lot worse based on the star rating but fish tasted fresh.

Quoting Kat L (with her permission, of course) from her review last month: "I think they are perfect for you if you are looking for a quick fix on your sushi/sashimi craving. You don't have to spend too much and it will tide you over for a few more days." The kid and I average $50 when we do Japanese. Thursday night a craving hit, but we were stuck at home and I was feeling frugal, so I broke out the Mikado delivery menu I had picked up from a stack in our lobby. For her I ordered a bento box with chicken katsu and beef shortrib teriyaki, plus ikura nigiri. For me, sake nigiri, hamachi nigiri and the decidedly non-traditional bagel roll (salmon and cream cheese). We passed the $25 minimum so we scored free edamame. All told, we spent $28 and change plus $4 tip. Sushi quality: A notch above supermarket sushi. As with Kat, it satisfied my craving, but it didn't make me close my eyes and moan the way really good sushi does. Bento box: The katsu arrived surprisingly crisp, hot and non-greasy. The kid loved it. She also made quick work of the ikura, eating all the eggs off and leaving the rice and seaweed for me. She liked the ribs as well, although I didn't particularly enjoy them. They brought to mind beef jerky dressed with soy sauce, which is fine, I guess, if you're in the mood for beef jerky dressed with soy sauce. All in all, I feel that we got our money's worth and will definitely order delivery from Mikado again if we ever need to "tide ourselves over".

So, with the dwindling options of restaurants around my work, my coworkers have ventured into looking at SF restaurants that offer free delivery. The first sushi restaurant that we tried was Mikado Sushi, and I'm not saying it's good, and I'm not saying it's bad. All I'm saying that it's okay, but I have definitely had better. The bento boxes are the most bang-for-your-buck selection, where you get to choose 2 or 3 of a list of options. I've tried most, but a few things to highlight... (1) The teriyaki chicken is hit or miss. Sometimes it's tender, and sometimes it's tough. Sometimes there's a ton of sauce, and sometimes there's hardly any. (2) The teriyaki beef sometimes is a little fatty. One time, I had an order that was half fat. Not appetizing for me...they should really trim the fat off. (3) The teriyaki salmon is dry most of the time. I know grilling fish is all about timing, so perhaps it needs to be pulled off the grill a few minutes earlier. (4) The tempura gets soggy. Of course, this is a function of delivery time. The longer it takes to deliver, the steam in the container will make the tempura batter lose its crispiness. They DO, however, deliver pretty fast, which is why we've ordered from them a few times...so I'll give them that.

I come here maybe once or twice every couple of months to get my sushi fix on with my coworkers. Sushi rolls and bento boxes are typical. But I have to note that fish is fresh and the proportions of most of their sushi rolls are just how I like it--bite sized, good amount of fish, and not over flowing with unneccessary rice. They also serve ramen and other noodle soups which I thought was the best find ever until I realized they were loaded with MSG after having several consecutive MSG-attacks so I stay away from those dishes now. They're indeed yummy but if you're MSG sensitive like me, then I suggest you just say "no"! My fave roll has to be the Barry Roll--fresh salmon, unagi, avacado, and shrimp tempura covered with their special spicy mayo sauce--heaven!!! Lesson Learned: You can order online from their website but note that if their fax line is down, they won't receive your order and there's no way for them to confirm whether your order went through so it might be best to just call in your order. As for parking, I just park in the garage across the street at Potrero Shopping Center. Just make sure the toy-cop is not near enough to see you park and leave the premise.

I can not believe how many people say this place isn't that great!! I am a big fan of sushi and I grew up eating sushi all my life! Although, I've never been there but I've ordered sushi delivery from this place a million times!! They get to your place very quick! The food is VERY fresh! Hamachi Kama - Super good! It's always juicy and alot of meat!! I order this from them at least 4 times a week and they have NEVER once let me down! Tuna & Hamachi Sashimi - Let me tell you, My grandpa is very picky when it comes to sashimi and he did not even want to order it because it's delivery and he's afraid that it wouldn't be good once it gets to our house but I still ordered it anyway. It was SOOOOO fresh! Amazing! The color of the tuna was beautiful! The hamachi was amazing!! Unagi, Tobiki, and Ikura sushi - WOW!! Again, fresh and amazing! I really hope you guys will give them another try, maybe order it by delivery! It's amazing! This is now my new favorite sushi place to order delivery from! Keep it up guys!

I am a huge huge huge sushi fan, which is why I cannot give them a 4 or 5 star....sometimes their sushi doesn't taste as fresh as it should. However, they have an awesome happy hour menu!!! Happy hours are from 4pm to 6pm. My friend and I went there last Friday and we literally ordered like 7 different items, including 3 different rolls, and our bill came out to be $25.00 not including tip!!! The food tasted really good that day...including the sushi. This is a great place to go with family and friends for a nice casual dinner. Their prices are very very reasonable. And after you eat there, you should visit the Sports Basement down the street on 15th and Bryant...awesome stuff there. I guess that will be my next review.

This is my go-to quick, decent, sushi place. I only go during their happy hour though (4-6 MF) because it doesn't seem worth it to go during their regular hours. It's usually pretty empty when I go, maybe 5 other people/groups there, but I like it because it's not too noisy and I can quickly eat in peace with my sushi, Asahi, and book. I usually get their spicy yellowtail along with various other rolls on their HH menu. I've heard they have a good tuna poke, so that is on my list. Come here if you're looking for cheap, decent, quick sushi. Otherwise, try somewhere else.

The sushi is not amazing. Nor is it authentic. However, when you work two blocks away and you want something that is not deep fried, carb heavy or swimming in MSG then this is the only place to go. Bento Box...cheap, easy and decent.

I've passed by many times and was really hesitant to go in because the building exterior isn't the most appealing. Inside, however, is nice and clean, total opposite. The prices are pretty good for the quality of fish you get. Hubs and I got the Mikado Special, spicy chef's special, and crazy monkey. Hubs was still hungry and ordered udon. If you want noodles, it's on a different menu, not the lunch& dinner menu.

came here on a whim, after picking up my race packet from Sports Basement. didn't know much about the place, and looking at Mikado from the exterior, I was a little wary. But when i walked in, it had a really great ambiance, and we were seated immediately. my friend and i ordered a couple rolls, and they were all very delicious! it did take a strangely long amount of time to make 3 rolls, none of which were baked. Overall a good experience, and the bathrooms were clean!

The boat is really a boat! Have you guys been to those places where you order something on the menu that's called a "sushi boat" and then it comes on a big plate or wooden plank? I mean, that's fine and all but if you tell me it's a boat, I kinda want it to be a boat! At Mikado, a boat is a boat! A cute boat stocked with delicious sushi, the perfect vehicle for a journey down the river of tastiness! The price is right, the service is good, and the prices are reasonable. And, the aforementioned river of tastiness... sail away, sail away, sail away!

I really really love Mikado's happy hour. It only runs from 4-6 M-F, but it's worth the trip if you can get here. They have $2 - $3 selections of Japanese beer and sake. The $3 large beers (Saporro, Kirrin, or Asahi) are enormously large, and will give you several pours. The sake is served in very generous portions as well. Mikado also does a good variety of happy hour food--$3.50 appetizers (chicken skewers, tofu, seaweed salad, etc) and a good selection of rolls $3 - $3.50, so this is the perfect place to come to when you're craving sushi and beer. The service is good. It's never crowded during happy hour, which I find a little strange (because it's kind of a steal). But that means you never have to wait for a table. It's a nice, low-key place to go with friends, and a good alternative to a happy hour at the bar when you're in a more conversational mood. Parking is also easy to find along the side streets.

Ok - I actually live about 2 doors down from this place, and I was so hopeful that this was going to be my sushi place. The sushi I ate here the first two times was ok, though I have to say the small flies buzzing around the second time was somewhat alarming. But, I got horrible food poisoning on my most recent visit (two nights ago). I know it was this restaurant because all I had earlier that day was a protein shake, a protein bar, and a small salad. I just don't think their kitchen is very clean, which is a dangerous thing in a sushi restaurant. They would only get one star, but their sake selection is really really good.

I'm not a sushi snob. At all. I can't deal with the texture of nigiri, sashimi or any uncooked seafood; it's cooked rolls all the way for me. So I can totally understand if someone who truly appreciates sushi in all its flavors, textures and nuances probably wouldn't take my opinion on the matter seriously. Nevertheless... This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants, and I used to come here 2-3 times a month when I lived in San Francisco. It's filling, tasty, and inexpensive. The SFPD roll is a party in my mouth. Walnut prawn roll: sweet, crunchy and delicious. I'm generally a pretty adventurous eater but this doesn't really apply for sushi: I stick with my favorites with very occasional variation, and I'm a happy girl. Mikado satisfies every time, and the reasonably priced hot sake doesn't hurt matters either. The service could be better. Tonight, the waiter dropped off our order and disappeared. We didn't see him again until he cleared plates, and then the check was delivered without even asking if we'd like anything further. Service has always been inconsistent as long as I've come here; occasionally it's excellent, often eh, like tonight. My order has always been delivered correctly, though, and I highly appreciate this quality. For yummy cheap sushi, this place rocks. Go get the SFPD roll; you won't be sorry.

Mikado is a quirky family owned sushi joint in the heart of the Mission. I love the atmosphere and the very personalized menu complete with sketches and customer notes and doodles. Unfortunately, although the waitress was quite sweet and funny, my experience was poor in terms of timely service. She was very apologetic, which definitely helped lighten the mood, but the food just wasn't worth it. I like the idea of the the restaurant, just not the execution. The sushi pieces were too large to eat gracefully, and the ingredients within the sushi were too large to hold together well. The fish itself included parts that I think other sushi restaurants would not use. There were dark spots on the flesh that were a bit too fishy. I wanted to like this place because of the atmosphere and organic ingredients, but will have to pass.

We live in the neighborhood and drop in to Mikado at least once a month for dinner, usually right after work. We love the fast & friendly service and their excellent happy hour menu. It's a cute little place with an un-fussy air. Today we ordered: 2 steamed spinach 1 fried tofu (4pc) 2 types of sushi rolls (8pc) 1 chicken teriyaki with rice, miso & salad 1 huge sapporo beer 1 bottle of sake Bill was only $35!!! Yep, they keep us coming back for more.

Another Japanese restaurant owned and operated by my peeps, i.e. Chinese people. So don't expect the most authentic stuff here. Tonight was my second time here, and the place is the epitome of 3 stars: some hits and some misses. I ordered the Mikado Super Boat Dinner. It is like a bento but bigger. It comes with salad (good dressing) and miso soup (hot but a little a salty). The Dinner has chicken and beef teriyaki, tempura, fried dumpings, and sashami. Both the chicken and beef teriyaki were tasty and the beef was steak which was awesome. The tempura was overcooked and the batter was the cheap kind - the good kind is light and fluffy and doesn't taste greasy. This one did. The sashami pieces were very big, a slice each of salmon, tuna and yellowtail. Sushi was good. Wife got an Nabeyaki udon, and said the noodles had good texture but the soup was bland. The chicken in the soup was tough. Overall she wasn't thrilled about her choice. My son devoured his tamago nigiri so I guess it was good. Service was friendly and efficient. Overall I guess I might be back if in the area.

The sushi was bland and had absolutely no texture. Without soy sauce and wasabi, it would've been nearly flavorless. For the price, you're better off buying from the ready-made section of Whole Foods.

Really disappointing! We are blow fish regulars, but for delivery, we have been ordering from this place repeatedly and this is our update on our 4 star rating. We were really impressed when we started ordering via grub hub or eat24 from them the past year and a half, noticing their attention to detail from preparation to packaging. The order we placed last time was delivered without any of the sauces, no tempura sauce, no sauce for the soft shell crab, which itself was more breaded that the tempura style they did in the past, not good. The tempura they use to deliver crisp was soggy this time, (this is the second time, in the order before this one that made us wonder, we got a badly butchered sashemi, but we thought, okay everyone has a bad day now and again, so we let it go at that). The noodle soup they use to deliver was packed with the broth separately to avoid the noodle from over cooking during delivery, this time it was mixed and the broth was sucked up in the noodle that there was almost no broth by the time we got it. The soup was bland and worse than the packaged soup sold at wholefoods or trader joe's. The grilled fish was burnt, oh! terrible, and again, no sauce. Really horrible to go from such great reputation to such a bad rating in about 6 months. We called them to ask if they were new owners, they declined to state and said, we may have ordered from somewhere else, after locating our order in their list of deliveries. 1 star for offering to have the driver return with sauces. The whole order could not be saved by a second delivery of just sauces. Even the packaging materials that mimicked Japanese sushi tray for rolls and sashemi have been replaced with Chinese delivery plastic containers. Even supermarkets package sushi in proper containers. Definitely different from before this change. Too bad we did like them when they were good, we ordered from them at least every month or twice a month. It had been a while since our last order and gave them a chance to make up for the last not so great products that showed distinct difference from what we were used to from this place, but this last one confirmed that it could not be the same business owner(s) and cook(s) that could have such drastic and negative difference. San Francisco has so many sushi restaurants, will not be ordering from this place again.

Thanks to you, Mikado Sushi, I can continue to be a shamelessly lazy bachelorette. Why cook when I can get incredibly fresh, artful sushi brought to my door in minutes? Standouts include the 49er roll (salmon, avocado, & lemon) and the spicy yellow tail roll. The staff is sweet and helpful, and my order arrived well before the estimated delivery time. Great dinner + not a dish dirtied = a happy, lazy girl.

The place here is very friendly and my friends and I go there every other Friday for happy hour. The food is great, I tried all the bento boxes and they are well portioned. My favorite is the Salmom bento box and the spicy tuna roll, the Caterpillar. The breadfruit that come with the vegetable tempura is delicious. We love it and sometimes we have a side order of just breadfruit which not all the restaurant in the city will have it in their bento box. The staffs are always friendly and that is one of the reason we continue to go here for sushi and sake.

Lesson learned=,= Don't have sushi when you're tight on budget, because you get gross sushi when you pay less. We came here because we were around mission area and was craving for sushi, but we couldn't afford going to fansy sushi bar, so we picked this place. We knew we pciked the wrong one when I saw the door(looks chinese-owned and cheap) but we were hungry and we thought, oh well, maybe they would surprise us. But no...sushi was small, in weird shape and the sauce taste gross...we also had a boat thing, that one taste pretty good actually. But the 2 sushi rolls I order both taste kinda gross, they are both cooked roll, but they look so small, and the sauce taste really weird...the baked salmon taste GROSS!I don't know what kind of salmon did they use... Won't come back again...no....

I can't go wrong with the Golden Shrimp Roll, their salad, and miso soup. Their Walnut Prawn Roll is pretty good too. Service is fast and attentive, and big-ups to the cute young server who gave us a free sample of some sake on our last visit. I forgot what it was called, but whatever it was it tasted very good!

This place would be really good if they could get their waitstaff to figure out how to seat people. Last week, I went in with 2 co-workers early while the dining room was basically empty. They pointed us to the table for 3 next to the fake stalk, and it looked tight (we were not little sized people) and asked to sit at a table that seats 4, there were 3 other tables that sat 4. Thjey would not. While we were waiting for out food, a group of 3 came in and they sat them at the table for 4. We were not happy. I just went back again today, early, and the same thing happened. This time we walked out. Not worth it the bad experience.

The shashimi portions were good but everything else was....ehhh Soup was too light in taste, rolls were skimpy and didn't taste fresh, tempura was just ok. I've had better elsewhere so I wont' be going back.

This place is pretty damn good. I've tried so many different rolls, I can't even pin point which ones I liked best. All the fish is really fresh. The sashimi platters are a winner along with the side salad. It comes with the creamy delicious sesame dressing. So yummy. My friends have ordered the bento boxes and seemed to be fans. I didn't care much for it. I think this place is best for sushi and fish!

I stumbled on this one accidentally. We were at Z-space watching a show and used the Navigation to find nearby "food". This is NOT a romantic dinner kinda place. We were seated at a table against the wall. I was able to watch the TV at the far end of the room (Asian soap channel) and my husband was looking above my head and watching late 80's movie. Definitely not a date night. BUT, the service could not be better. To premise this: My husband is a bodybuilder and eats large quantities of food. He prefers quantity over quality. The food here was absolutely delicious and the portions are large! I'm a huge sashimi snob. This hole in the wall exceeded my expectations. We ordered the calamari appetizer (i.e. deep 4 fried calamari steaks - $5.95), lrg. hot sake ($5.50), Assorted Sashimi dinner ($16.95) & Seafood Tempura dinner ($11.95). Everything was delicious, we had to get to-go boxes! Superior service, delicious food, the sashimi was fresh and large portions (the menu stated 10 pcs - they gave me 12 lrg pcs), standard Japanese restaurant pricing and we left FULL! Will definitely go again, but would skip the appetizer due to the large dinner portions.

I have only been here for lunch, and there really isn't anything special about this place but think that is why I like it. Fresh fish, enough variety, simple decor, spacious, nice staff, reasonably priced. I almost always order the sashimi lunch special which I think is around $12. It includes a salad, miso soup, rice and maybe 8 pieces of fish. PERFECT for lunch, and very reasonably priced for that much food. If you are dinning with a picky eater, the bento boxes for $8-9 are great. They have enough options that include gyoza (pot stickers), tempura, chicken teriyaki etc. Enjoy

One of my go to Japanese delivery spots. We don't order the fancy rolls but their hamachi, salmon, unagi, etc...are consistent and reasonable. Their food is good and delivery is fast! I always get something from their deep fried dinner entree's. Sesame chicken & garlic chicken hit the spot! I've also had their sukiyaki, which is surprisingly good for delivery. They're good peeps. I've been ordering from them for years and on the off chance that the food isn't up to par, they make good on it!

Not bad. Not super memorable at all so the review is a bit dry. Breakdown of what I had below. Mikado dinner shrimp and tempura chicken teriyaki - fried, somewhat fake Japanese food. Not bad. The batter was better than most places. CA Roll - you can't mess this up and they didn't. The happy hour seems pretty reasonable. The atmosphere is more chill and service was fairly good. The only annoyance I got was that they seated my gf and I right underneath the TV when there was plenty of room elsewhere. Perhaps the server wanted us to sit close to the window, but it was a small annoyance when the TV was blaring above us.

2 item lunch bento for $9.95 + tax; 3 item lunch bento for $11.95 + tax. Nice, inexpensive Japanese restaurant near my work. Free delivery with a minimum of $20 purchase - which sucks if you're ordering for yourself. Happy hour is just okay - not great; not bad. Prices are cheap but that comes with the quality. It's not the freshest sashimi out there but it's edible. Note that my friend and I were the only party during happy hour. - Salmon Terkiyaki - pretty good but it might be too cooked if you like you're meat medium rare - Spicy Crispy Chicken - a bit soggy after it's been picked-up/delivered Overall, a pretty good place for Japanese meal that's inexpensive.

There is nothing extraordinary about Mikado Sushi. The selection of sushi, sashimi and dinner entrees is standard, portions are as big as you'll get anywhere else, and flavors are hardly memorable. Yet, for some reason I continue to eat here and I'm not really sure why. I think the answer might be that they deliver FAST. Whenever I have the urge for some chicken katsu, some salmon teriyaki or some shrimp tempura, I can order a 3-item bento box online (at a reasonable $13.95) and usually have my meal in my home, ready to eat in about 25 minutes. Call me easy to impress but that's pretty damn fast! In fact, I've been to sushi restaurants where I'd be dining in and it'll still take over 25 minutes just to even bring the food out. The fact that they process my order, cook, and deliver pretty good food in that same amount of time is pretty remarkable. In addition to super speedy service, the food is good enough to satisfy any of your cravings for Japanese food. In addition to the bento boxes, give the rolls a try. There are certainly some hits (Special Roll and Walnut Prawn Roll) and misses (Crunch California Roll and Spider Roll), but some of the menu items are well worth a taste. Although the food probably isn't good enough to dine-in, I would recommend Mikado Sushi for anyone looking to get a quick fix of Japanese food from a restaurant that will deliver to your doorstep in record time. It's definitely not the best Japanese food you'll ever have in your life, but it's good enough! But then again, I have low standard and am incredibly easy to please.

I think this place survives on being a delivery based business rather than an eat- in restaurant because when I eat there, there's usually only 2 or 3 other table with customers in them. I usually go on early-ish weeknights. I used to assume this place wasn't that great because it looked semi-empty, but I took a chance one night and found that it made getting my food pretty quick. They're food is pretty standard. I usually get bentos because that's more bang for your buck and I like trying an array of food. My negative is that their food reminds me of any other standard sushi place. My positive is that they have really good service. The waiters are very attentive and when anyone comes through the door, I see one of the workers, not walk, but run over the greet incoming customers. The effort is appreciated. This is a place that you'd go into if you happen to be around the area, but not a place you would go out of your way to eat at. 3 stars!

This place is a great value. I've been here over 6 times the last year and never had a bad experience. They play cool music and the food is always on point. The bottom line: If you are looking for some good sushi and teriyaki for the price this is the place to hit up. If you're looking for that over the top sushi or super super fresh sushi then Blowfish or Barracuda may be what you're looking for. The prices there are also a little pricier. This place definitely does the job. There boat is awesome too.

We come here every week. It's not the most fabulous restaurant on the planet - but it's reliable and reasonable and perfect for Friday nights after work. They have a great "Happy Hour" with discounted specials. Seriously, I've probably eaten here 70 times. Perfect Japanese comfort food. It would be better if they didn't have the TV's.

This review is based on a delivery lunch order. This is one of the only Japanese restaurants we could find that would deliver to our work location in the SOMA area. I am skeptical of Japanese restaurants that deliver, however, San Francisco was experiencing a rain storm and there was no way I was going to traipse somewhere for lunch. I like to judge japanese restaurants on the quality of the california rolls and using that as my barometer, I knew this place was going to be just A-Ok. I had the 3 item bento box which included salmon teriyaki, beef short ribs and california rolls. All items were edible, but I have had better.

the inside looks SO MUCH better than the outside. The outside looks small, cheap, and kinda eh. We came in just in time before the Happy Hour ends so that means $3.25 &$2.25 food! Our waiter noticed me checking into Yelp, so...... our food came in like IMMEDIATELY. No kidding! Like 5min after ordering everything came one by one. OMG. We were so happy! BUT THEN..... Sushi tastes like blargh. They just add cucumber slices to fish and then call it a roll? Please.... even my cat can do better! The gyoza is definitely those frozen Costco pack. The Agedashi tofu is whatever... Will be back for more if I'm super broke... or maybe... I might just go to buy amazing Burrito instead of wasting my $$$ here!

It was okay, but not great. I didn't like the tuna poke, which is too bad because that's a dish that I usually really like. I also got the Angel Roll, and it was okay, but not amazing. I'd order here again if my favorite places are closed, which they often are at between meal times.

Right now this is based on their delivery. I ordered online and deliberately requested twice on the order for spicy mayo on the side. So they forgot that. I had waited an hour for delivery. The delivery guy then takes back my order and said it will be another hour for me to get my order back. I told them the hot part of my order better be hot when I get it along with the sushi not being super warm. I am still waiting for my order. *Two hours later since initial order* They forgot my free order of edamame. The miso was COLD. the sashimi and sushi was warm and had been sitting out way too long. The albacore was not fresh. Tuna was ok. The Crazy monkey roll was missing the avocado from it.

Do not order from their website, I put in an order and waited almost 1,5 hours nothing arrived, called in to see what the status is and they tell me they have no orders even that i give them the order number, they put me on hold and after 15 minutes nothing just noise in the background with people chatting and kitchen noise I those to hang up. First time ordered from this place they will never hear back from me.

Ordered 2 rolls and 2 bento combos with chicken katsu, spicy chicken, beef teriyaki, and sashimi through their website and it came out to about $50. On that end, it went well because the order was ready for pick up when I arrived at the restaurant about 30 minutes later. However, everything went wrong after that. The sushi rolls had way too much rice and didn't really taste like anything without soy sauce. Both the spicy chicken and chicken katsu were really dry even when eating them with their respective sauces. The beef teriyaki was only ok; the meat was somewhat tough and there wasn't much flavor to it. Their biggest failure was the sashimi though. Not only was the serving size extremely small, but it sent my friend to the bathroom with the runs after she ate it. So there you have it: overpriced mediocre food with a high chance of food poisoning if you decide to order anything raw. I would recommend going somewhere cheaper for mediocre food or somewhere with better food at this price.

DEEEEEELICIOUS. Great take out, easy to order and great prices! 11.95 bento boxes! By far the best deal in the neighborhood (trust me, I've been doing my research since moving home) I even ordered online and when they had a question about my order, they called me to make sure it was correct! Outstanding customer service by Mikado! Just dont park in the parking lot at safeway to walk across the street to pick up your food, I got a ticket once!!

Decided to try this place via GrubHub since I was in the mood for Japanese (which is very rare since I don't particularly enjoy the food) and I didn't feel like leaving my apartment. The chicken teriyaki was so-so but the sushi was surprisingly decent.

Mikado provided quickly delivered bento boxes and donburis on a rainy day to my office this week. We were pleasantly surprised by the price, delivery time, and quality of food. Everyone enjoyed their dishes, although I have to say we didn't order any sushi. I ordered a bowl of ramen which was flavorful and filing, however it was nothing like Japanese ramen. I don't know if the noodles just soaked too long in the broth, but they were really soft when food was delivered. The people over the phone were really nice. They threw in a California Roll because we ordered so much food. I will definitely be calling them for delivered lunches again.

I love the staff and food here! The quality is the best and so is their variety. They have a board full of specialty rolls, one of my favorite is the SFPD roll. I like how all the baked rolls are warm and fresh. I like the hot miso soup compared to lukewarm miso. The oysters and sashimi are fresh and delicious! I love this place.

Not too bad! I was expecting the worst, but Mikado did not disappoint! The price is just right, but I have had better tasting sashimi. We ordered the Sushi Loveboat which came with 12 pieces of sashimi, some # of nigiri, 8 pieces of sushi, and edamame. All that food for just $30.00! The interior looked pretty good too; it seems like they were renovating since there was a man attaching some modern looking things onto the wall. I also noticed some booths which made think of future sake bombing adventures. From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but we were pleasantly surprised. Just goes to show you shouldn't always judge a book by its cover!

My boyfriend, Dave (the actual yelper), and I went to this restaurant for a date in SF one night. He'd been several times before with climbing buddies...and on occasion brought home leftovers for me to enjoy. I was sold on those...but even more won over when I got to experience Mikado's firsthand. The sushi is delicious, even the rolls offered on their very reasonably priced "Happy Hour" menu. I believe we spent about $20-$25 dollars for drinks, some california rolls, a specialty roll (can't remember which, but is was mmm-mmm-good!), edamame, and some veggie rolls. (Their veggie rolls are my favorite) I also really like fusion of modern and traditional Japanese decor. I do give it 4 stars though because while I loved the decor and I had fun with my boyfriend, it otherwise didn't have much of a vibe. There were only a couple of other tables filled, but that could very well be due to the early hour we were there. Overall, I really liked this place and their yummy sushi...I look forward another visit!

I've only gotten pickup from Mikado thus far. My work allows us to get meals and other perks through betterworks, and mikado is a participating restaurant not too far from my house. I've tried the tuna poke and albacore tataki and both were delish. Between the two rolls, angel roll and the screaming alaska, both were good but I preferred the latter. Quick service, friendly, easy to get to. Doesn't look like much from the outside but definitely a solid sushi place for a no frills but yummy dinner.

Oh man, this might be the worst sushi I've ever had. I just ordered it, delivery, and realized I needed to speak up immediately. The rice is minute rice--fat grain, flavorless--somehow made "sticky". The California roll that came with my bento box is just creamed fake crab meat (I realize they're usually fake crab meat, but there's usually also some avocado or cucumber or carrot or something. And it's so weirdly creamy--what is that?). I ordered salmon teriyaki and received chicken teriyaki that's chewy and fatty. I couldn't be more disappointed. I don't know why I'm even giving it two stars--probably because when I read people's one star reviews, I have a hard time taking them seriously. I'm usually like "ok, those are weak criticisms, you're just a jerk." I'm not just a jerk. I want to you take this review seriously: this place is gnarly. I also saw some reviews that said delivery is quick. I'm about five blocks away, and my order got here about 45 minutes after I ordered it. That isn't horrible, I guess, for the city. But everything in my order is a nasty lukewarm. The gyoza & the chicken (which I didn't order, I ordered salmon) should probably be warmer than room temperature. They're not cold, like, on purpose. Oh man, it's so gross! Avoid at all costs!

I think that for the price, this sushi place cannot be beat. I ordered the bento box three combo with sashimi, sushi and a spicy tuna roll and the portions were generous and the fish was delicious and really fresh. I used to always order from Live Sushi, but the quality of the fish here is so much better that its going to be my new "go to" spot. And they delivered on a Sunday afternoon in under 30 minutes. Not bad at all.

Mikado Sushi doesn't look very appealing form the street but once you're inside it's very welcoming. The tables are a bit too small for their large plates. The sushi and sashimi are excellent. Entrees are delicious and come in very hearty portions. You'll never leave hungry! This place is affordable and gets pretty busy during lunch and dinner. They only have street parking so bring quarters during day light hours. My favorite sushi is the sunset strip roll. It has salmon, tuna, yellow tail and crab wrapped in cucumber. No rice, no seaweed!

Food is OK, but had to wait 90 minutes on a Seamless web order. Salad arrived warm, and miso was cold...even the avocado in the California roll had started to change color. Yuck.

No. My friend and I were here for lunch yesterday, and he quite possibly hyped this place up for me a little too much. He said it was pretty good, and I'm always looking for new sushi joints. And this was possibly the worst I've been to in quite a while. My gripe mainly is with the price of the roll that I got. I got the Angel Roll thinking that I'd get at least maybe a couple of pieces for the price ($8.95), but to get only six little pieces with the tuna missing (it said it was supposed to have salmon, hamachi, and tuna) really pissed me off. AND, their "spicy sauce" is the hot sauce I put in my pho! That sent me over. I also ordered the maguro sashimi lunch, which was decent enough for sashimi I suppose. But paying $10.95 for that was too much for me, too, especially since I didn't get a salad with my meal when I was supposed to. Both of my orders were completely incomplete, and I don't know how you can send out food like that. On the plus side, my friend (the one who's been here before) ordered a bento lunch and thoroughly enjoyed it. So that's a plus, and I guess if I wanted to come here again for lunch (highly unlikely), I would just go for the bento. In short, I paid too much for sushi that wasn't even worth it. To be honest, I'd rather go back to Sushi Rock for their refrigerated sashimi than ever come back here again.

My sweet baby and I needed a midday pick me up after doing a little shopping. I remembered my fellow Yelper Adam X. telling me about Mikado's awesome happy hour. We were right in the hood so we decided to give it a shot. It was a rainy Saturday afternoon, and i think this place is more of a weekday place, so it was pretty empty. We were of course seated immediately, and our server was very nice and not over bearing. We decided to select a couple things off the happy hour menu: $2 viper roll, $3 seaweed salad, and 50% beverages (we each got a Sapporo for $1.50 each!). We also decided to not be uber cheap and get some non-happy hour items like the crazy monkey roll (very tasty) and the tempura edamame! Yum; semi-spicy shelled edamame in tempura! Tasty! All of our food was pretty good. Every time we've come here we've always had a solid experience and we know it as a good go-to spot when we are in the hood. The happy hour (I think it is from 4pm-6pm Mon-Sat) is pretty awesome; I mean Sapporos for $1.50 each? Hello! Our entire bill with tax for two people was $23.80. Definitely worth checking out for some cheap beers and pretty good sushi!

Walking into this place I had my doubts, it looks like your run of the mill neighborhood sushi dive. In the end it generally beat my expectations and turned out to be reasonably good. My hamachi nigiri was a little tougher than I like, but still decent quality, cut, and rice. The roles were simple but good: spicy hamachi rolls and Mikado special rolls were both fine choices. Service was energetic and sometimes confused and chaotic, but in the end they got us everything we needed though it took a while to get through our meal. Overall not a destination or a date place, but as a neighborhood and delivery sushi joint it's a perfectly good option.

I'm a fan of Brenda who used to manage this place, and now, a big fan of Pamela, who manages it now. But this is a review of my favorite Nabeyaki Udon in the city. The big black pot is filled with pieces of chicken, calamari, seaweed, egg, tempura shrimp, and of course udon, served in a delicious broth. On Friday, I had this udon for lunch, and went back to get two orders for dinner. My coworkers are not surprised by this, as I used to frequent Mikado for Nabeyaki udon at least twice, maybe three times a week. Now that I'm watching my carb intake, it's much less frequent, but it's still my favorite. Don't hate because it's a Chinese-owned Japanese restaurant. I love SF Japantown, but I haven't yet found a Japanese-owned joint with better Nabeyaki Udon than Mikado's. Take that, J-town.

No so much a review as a notification for a new location. The same people who run Mikado also have a new place that just opened Dec 21st out in Pacifica. Ocean Fish Sushi and Grill. Here's a yelp link my review: yelp.com/biz/ocean-fish-… . Based on my experience at Ocean Fish I will have to visit Mikado.

I'm definitely not a sushi connoiseur, but I like this place. They have pretty decent rolls like their spicy yellowtail, spicy tuna, spider roll, dragon roll and california roll. I actually think their california roll is above average compared to other sushi places in the neighborhood. Their poki is pretty tasty, but quite spicy. We order take out from here and they usually over estimate the time it'll take for the food to arrive. I appreciate that they manage expectations. They've never messed up our delivery order either. If you spend over $30 with delivery you get free california rolls...free food is always a plus!

Dumping your menus everywhere is called littering, which sucks. And you know the jerk you hired to do it is putting multiples on every building in the Inner Sunset, and even strapping them to trees - yes, trees. After seeing these crappy menus strewn about I am about as likely to eat at Mikado as one of those trees.

We came back from the gym and stopped here for dinner and everything was fantastic. The owner was very welcoming. we ordered dinner bento that came with salad and soup. i thought i already full by eating the the soup and salad already but then the bento diner came, and WOW i was blown away, the portion is amazing. the flavor was spot on. this place is a hidden gem, most definetly we will come back. now i know where to go for diner after gym. YEAHHHH

For me, this place was just okay. I was a fan of the prices, but didn't realize until we got our rolls that the pricing was lower because these were 6-piece rolls, not 8. But, the food was good despite the wait for delivery. I was really happy when I learned that this place does delivery, but for a place that is about 2 miles from my house, I would have never expected it to take almost 1.5 hours. We had the Dragon Roll, Rainbow Roll, Viper Roll, and Spicy Tuna Roll. With that, because it was over $30, they are also doing a promotion right now where you get a FREE California Roll with an order of $30 or more. I would probably eat here again, but the three stars comes because I would go somewhere else over this place if given the opportunity.

Went here for an impromptu date and had a really good meal. Reading the reviews, it seems most people find the place kind of so-so, but we had a good meal at a reasonable price. The service was courteous without being overly fawning - a nice balance. I'm planning on going back and checking out more of their menu.

I was craving sushi on a weekend afternoon at around 3pm. After driving around for what felt like hours, and going by several sushi places that didn't open until dinner time, this place was open, there was parking, and I guess we were on an adventure! Ok sushi, nothing sensational but it hit the spot and made my craving go away at least. Service was fine, and prices were not unreasonable. Again, the ONLY sushi place in all of Potrero Hill/SOMA that we could find OPEN at 3pm. (Live claimed to be open on Yelp but wasn't when we pulled up in front of the place.)

As previously stated, I hate HATE cheap sushi places. But there is also a dearth of good restaurants near my office and sometimes I am forced to order lunch with the masses when I've been out too late the previous night to have prepared a lunch to bring into work. Thus, today's lunch was my first experience with Mikado. For $8.50, my bento box had a small saba filet (Shioyaki! Yay! TERIYAKI is the devil.) and a small serving of chicken katsu, with a scoop of rice and a small green salad. And it was actually good. Even better, I didn't have to leave my office - they delivered. Of course, I will not dare try the sushi here. I'll stick to the fried and grilled stuff, arigato very much kthx. Now excuse me while I go wipe the tonkatsu sauce off my pants.

Went out drinking one recent afternoon and, boxed in by a squad car, decided to kill time dining in the hood. Chose what looked like the least likely cop hangout. What do you know? Police ordering bento box dinners. Go figure. I sulked to a back seat and considered my options. Hamachi nigiri, salmon skin Maki, and a special called "super white tuna." I asked three times and the waitress pointed to her mouth in the universal signal of "I don't know what I'm talking about." Finally she said in a distinctly non-Japanese accent, "Very good. You try." Sushi was passable, under average for San Francisco. Took a long while despite a crowd of 5 because they seemed to process the many take-out orders in turn. Rice was good enough but dry and not enough vinegar, fish didn't stay put. Salmon skin was small and too salty. Hamachi was perfect except not fresh. I don't want to insult him, though. Do you want on your own tombstone, good guy, nice texture and temperature, waited too long to eat him? Not the fault of the poor fish. You know how when they forget items on your order, you secretly hope they just foget? Completely done, hands washed, sake finished, 40 minutes into the event, someone who spoke English asked if I wanted my check. She reappeared a few minutes later to tell me condescendingly that they weren't done with me. Damn. The super white tuna nigiri was quite good, slightly marinaded in vingegar, cold, tasty. Beautiful. I'm going to try this myself. If I could have half a pound of it I would eat it like a wild bear. Still, I could have done without. The cops were gone by now so I paid the check. I was really in need of a special treat so on the way I stopped by Tonayense, our local taco truck, to have some beef brains. There's a delicacy. Now I'm happy. Yummmmmm.

They served us store bought and freezer burned Gyoza and they didn't even cook them properly. We decided to not order dinner after that. Only reason they get two stars is that the booze was all half price since it was happy hour.

This place is great. I have read a lot of bad reviews for this place, but the fact remains that this place gives you exactly what you want: pretty good food at reasonable prices. I like the tempura edamame and the salmon. You can't beat the deal on the three item special. Great stuff. They have super great prices on happy hour prices. How can you complain about this place?!

Get the Golden Gate Bridge Roll, its pretty damn good. Their lunch menu is cheap as hell, so check that out. I went there twice, and both times they were playing shitty Top-40 music on the speakers. That was weak, but I'll go back again someday.

The waitress was nice and accommodating, rolls were okay, the prices are okay. Nothing spectacular, the rolls taste just like how they would taste at other sushi restaurants with the same price range ($4 for small rolls and $8-$11 for large/fancy rolls). I ordered take out with some rolls and a seaweed salad. The waitress said that they're going to give me edamame for free. Yay! Not yay.... I made the mistake of not checking the food when they handed the take out bag to me. When I got home, no seaweed salad was to be seen! I'm sure it's just a one time mistake but I do feel jipped because I paid for the seaweed salad and was looking forward to eat it too! The free edamame shells were too thick so it was really hard to get the beans from the pods. Parking was very easy.

I guess I would consider giving them 3 1/2 stars but 3 stars will suffice. Being that I ordered delivery and it did take about 1 to 2 hours to deliver, which is understandable in SF traffic. Although I was really close by.. For the full review and pics go to kats9lives.com/2008/08/f… To put it plain and simple, it's pretty decent food for the price you pay ESPECIALLY being in SF. The delivery guy was very nice and I still gave him a nice tip. I am sure the food probably tastes much better fresh, but this review is based on delivery. I think they are perfect for you if you are looking for a quick fix on your sushi/sashimi craving. You don't have to spend too much and it will tide you over for a few more days. I really enjoyed the convenience of having delivery because I was stuck with no car that night. They do offer free edamame for orders over $25 and a free California Roll for orders over $30. I thought the edamame was fine and apparently looking at the reviews luckily I couldn't understand her and got the edamame. Let's just say it might be a battle to try and put your order in. It took many times for me to get the order straight. The total she gave me was wrong and I called back. Apparently she messed up the order and we had to go through the whole ordeal again. Eventually we got it right, or I just gave up. =P The Yellow-tail (Hamachi) Sashimi was decent. The Dynamite Roll was good and the Philadelphia Roll was fine. The best part was the prices. I thought the rolls were a little bit small, but for being ~$5 they weren't too bad. I really didn't like the Bento Dinner Combo that I chose. The Salmon Shioyaki was a huge disappointment and does NOT hold up well for delivery. It's bland and rough. The Spicy Garlic Chicken didn't hold up too because it was fried. The sauce was tasty though. Stick with the rolls and sushi if you are doing take out in my opinion. The fried food will definitely not hold up and the salmon will end up being overcooked.

Been going here since 2008. The food is great. They have booths with curtains for privacy which is the best place to sit! I love that they provide Togarashi on the tables. The waiters and waitresses provided the best service possible until they hired new staff. They're not as attentive or friendly as the old staff.

Working in the industrial part of San Francisco leaves you limited on where to go for lunch. I was a usual of the restaurant being the fact that they were the only local Japanese place that delivers to the industrial area. I recommend the bento boxes because they give you a lot for what you pay for! Order at least 30 minutes ahead of time because one time I acutally waited for almost an hour.

Ok, here's the lowdown from an SF native and true sushi lover... This place was already good from many years ago and has most definitely gotten much, much better! Though I've been politely fed by an array of sushi chefs and young servers, Mary and Charles (the current sushi chefs) are doing a bang-up, awesome job tagteaming with their SUPER FRESH and delicious creations at the bar!!! Now, you gotta go and come git some! Tell Charles and Mary the Filipina sent ya ;)

Its true, I don't like to try new things without someone's recommendation. But I got lazy and adventurous, and found that sometimes its a good thing rather than a bad thing. So what I found is a really good sushi place just two blocks away from my door. Its reasonably priced, service is really polite, and the food is very edible. Update 4/2/6: I come here at least once a week for a dinner now (help me) and it has never been a bad experience. Dinner for two will range from $20 to $60 and will be really really good. I even got delivery once, and it took only (!!!) around 30 min to get to my door. Update 4/26/6: Okay, now they tell me that my food is going to take an hour to get to my door, but the guy come in about 15 min.. I guess he doesn't mind walking... :D

I come here for lunch every now and then. It's one of the healthier meals 7-8 dollars can buy in our office neighborhood. The portions are enough to fill you up that you'd want to take a stroll before going back to work. My personal favorite is unagi don (eel in barbeque sauce with steamed rice). They also have decent bento box meals that include soup, salad, two dishes of your choice and steamed rice. I enjoy dining at the restaurant. At lunch, the noise level is manageable for its size. It's tiny-- probably 15 tables at most, packed in a narrow space. The service is reasonably fast although delays do occur, especially when there's a big crowd waiting at the door. The kitchen slows down during the peak hour. So, the best time to go is at 1:30pm. Service is faster from this point on. But the servers, no matter what time of day, are always polite. The place has a combination of rotating artwork on the right and a stainless steel-looking ribbon wall decor running on the entire left wall if you're standing behind the entrance. It makes the place look modern and hip. If you're in the neighborhood during the day, this is a Japanese restaurant worth trying. It's good Japanese food and great value for money.

When I've accomplished errands, the pangs of hunger are coming on, and I see rock star parking near a restaurant that I am familiar with, what I do is take it, because sometimes hunger can be unforgiving and so can parking in San Francisco. Our dinner started out with the standard miso soup. On a scale of 1-5, with 5 being the highest rating, their miso soup gets a 5. This soup was flavorful and not too salty. With a couple of swirls of my chopsticks and a quick whiff of this soy bean paste soup, it was gone in just three gulps. This was exceptionally good miso soup. We orered two appetizers. The agadashi tofu, which was lightly fried and lying in it's yummy ponzu-like sauce with the fish flakes, was excellent. Our second appetizer was gyoza. This dish is a must-have when I go for Japanese food. For the record, these were the worse I've had by far since Tempura Express! (I have not been there since I was a toddler.) They lacked substance, flavor and were not properly made. In fact, they were falling apart once dipped in the shoyu. They tasted like they were the frozen kind you would find at Ranch 99. These were absolutely awful and I recommend you to veer away from ordering this dish. Now, I'm not the avid sushi-holic, but instead, I am a loyal bento box patron. I ordered the beef teriyaki and the tempura. The beef was tender and lean and the teriyaki sauce was delish with a lingering taste of rice wine/ sake. The tempura always completes my bento experience. There were two shrimps and a small medley of vegetables that were lightly fried and just choice. These were definitely up to par and you cannot go wrong with these. The slice of orange that finalizes the meal was ripe with sweetness. The service was excellent, the prices were decent, and if it's convenient for you, this place is not bad for a great bento box.

  • M Y.

Good enough for me around this neighborhood. I usually get the bento box (tonkatsu, teriyaki chicken, CA rolls or tempura). For less than $12 (3 item bento box with rice, salad, and miso soup) my wallet and tummy are satisfied.

This place is perfectly average. I like the fact that they deliver, but the fact that it takes an hour to deliver raw fish is perplexing. I like the fact that their sashimi portions are generous, but the fact that they sometimes contains small bones is irritating. I like the fact that the price is competitive, but the fact that the tuna poki is 8 bucks and contains a very small amount of fish is disappointing (especially bc i love me some poki). As I stated earlier. Perfectly Average.

I always judge sushi restaurants on their nigiri...seem's like a fair way to judge apples to apples. Today I had the Sake (Salmon) and a spicy tuna hand roll. Quick bite, simple to make, impossible to mess up. Neither were that good. Spicy tuna was bland. Sake was chewy, did not have good texture. Since it's close to my place I (maybe) will try out their happy hour (mostly for the half priced drinks) and will update review accordingly.

Not so much... I use to go there once in a while when I knew some people who worked there, and I didn't even like it that much then. I have been back a few times since and have only left disappointed. There are way to many good places for sushi in the city which has better food at a better price.

I get food to go here because it's convenient. Their food is okay, but not great. I've had their bento boxes and an assortment of sushi but out of everything I've had there for lunch, my favorite is the katsu-don. The katsu-don is very tasty and it comes with a side salad and miso soup. Go ahead and try it.

Four stars for SUSHI DELIVERY! When I want to be jammified on the couch and not leave and have someone bring me my fishies, I call Mikado. It's very convenient and they throw in free edamame or CA roll with your order. (I'm sure there is a minimum for getting the free stuff, but we always meet it.) It isn't the best sushi in the universe, but I have managed expectations for delivery sushi. The rolls are tasty enough for dinner, but I wouldn't order the nigiri again. Minus one star for not-so-fresh hamachi. I've ordered from them twice, and both times I would say "Solid B" for their maki sushi. And I will totally order from them again when the jammies and sofa are a callin'.

Mmmm....sour fish... They delivered sushi to my workplace today and it was a downward spiral from the moment they took our order. No one on the phone spoke English. When we were finally able to get hold of an English speaking person they couldn't figure out how to get to our location, which was only blocks away. Took awhile for them to arrive. By the time the food arrived we were all starving. I dug right into my assorted sashimi platter. Big mistake. After popping about 8 pieces of sashimi into my mouth I took a moment to try to savor the flavor, but realized what I tasted was sour fish. Reported this finding to my co-workers. They asked which one. The dark red salmon. Uh oh. We knew we might be in for it. Lets see who shows up for work tomorrow. The next 4 hours of work resulted in: - me hiding in my cubicle quenching my uneasy stomach - 4 bathroom trips - throwing away their take-out menu and swearing never to order from them again

Simply the best sushi. I know its not a 5 star sushi place, but this place is good! Plus they will do the soy wrap on anything you want (read Yoshi's review for reference)! Service is really good. If you don't want to dine in, they deliver. The delivery guy is super nice and plays with my dog and cat when he's at the door. Yoshi's could learn a thing or two from Mikado.

i had their sushi awhile ago and thought it was okay. They also have a pretty good selection of rolls. i ordered a tempera udon and was disappointed. their soup base was not very tasty. instead of being "salty" it was more like.. winter melon soup? their udon noddles were also over cooked and soggy. every time i tried to pick a noodle up with my chopsticks, it broke.

I used GrubHub to order our Friday night dinner from Mikado. This is a great option for delivery for our family since it is so difficult to go out with 2 young kids. I was advised it would be a 1 hour and 15 minute wait but was surprised when the food arrived within 45 minutes of placing the order online. Sushi is not phenomenal but fish was surprisingly fresh and prices are reasonable for sushi. Some of the nori on the special rolls I ordered had come apart so -1 for quality. I ordered a deep fried roll which did not taste so great since it was not hot .. the fried covering had gone soft during delivery so -1 there. Dinner total cost delivered was $50. Not unreasonable for sushi.. delivered! Essentially, this place got a point off for the delivery aspect. I would expect to give Mikado 4 stars on the food alone for dine-in.

Part 2 of the Potrero Center Trilogy. Being across the street from, rather than inside, the strip mall, Mikado has nominally more atmosphere than I Luv Teriyaki & Sushi, but it's still very much a suburban/SoCal experience. Now since their name mentions *only* sushi, I deemed it safe to actually try some rolls here, and I have to say, the Half Moon Bay roll ain't Half Moon Bad (fried fish and lychee, together at last!). Nevertheless--maybe it's the location, maybe it's the 1 star reviews by (ultimate sushi snob) Nobu K, but I'll always see both Mikado & ILTS as being on the cheap, journeyman side of the sushi spectrum. Trouble is, the prices at Mikado take themselves a little too seriously for that.

I've had better. I originally wanted to go to I love Teriyaki next to Boston Market but they were closed. I settled for this place because I was craving sushi. Stingy portions. When you've experienced eating at a place that serves amazing sushi, every other sushi restaurant seems mediocre.

I've eaten in here and I've also ordered for delivery. When I ate here, there were ZERO customers in the restaurant. The parking wasn't too bad when I went, but I think you might normally find it hard to find parking. It's a weird looking little place but interesting random interior designs. The service was very friendly. I thought the sushi was pretty good, but my bf wasn't too pleased and normally, it's very easy to please him. He said the sushi was too small, which I don't remember. I thought it was pretty good. Then I ordered for delivery and again, fast and friendly service. The sushi was pretty good BUT... my bf doesn't really like experimenting with raw sushi etc. I ordered a roll that had raw spicy tuna in it and I told him to try it. It took forever for him to try it and when he finally did, he was so grossed out! He finally swallowed and had to down a lot of water. I really thought he was just being a big baby because he doesn't like that stuff. I took a bite of it and spit it back out IMMEDIATELY! That crap they gave us that they called spicy tuna was SPOILED! It tasted like stale, spoiled, garbage! I couldn't even wash it down with water, I had to drink soda to wash it down and I never drink soda. It was so bad that we sometimes give our dogs left overs, but I wouldn't even trust giving this to my dogs. I was going to call and let them know that the spicy tuna was spoiled, but my bf told me to let it go. He doesn't normally complain about food and I'm more of the aggressive one when it comes to banning a place, but he will never go back here again. The other rolls were average, but that spicy tuna roll really killed it...

Happy Hour is where it's at. Their food outside of that is super tasty, but kinda pricey. Happy hour offers super cheap sushi, and half off their drinks, PERFECT to get blitzed at... well that is of course if you get off work at 3:30, happy hour's from 4-6 mo-sat

Okay, if you're named Mikado sushi you'd better incorporate Gilbert and Sullivanesque craziness into the menu, decor, etc. Besides having an excellent seaweed salad, I would say it's pretty average. Nothing stood out about this place other than the fact that it's decently priced (not cheap, not expensive) and the food is "good". Ideas for names of future rolls; Nanki-Poo Ko-Ko Pooh-Bah Pish-Tush Yum-Yum Pitti-Sing Peep-Bo If you could get them to sing, now that would be SOMETHING!

I met the lovely Shrimpy Chips here for a fabulous feast, and ordered an array of her fellow underwater creatures. We had a few rolls, one consisting of shrimp and walnuts, the best of the bunch I might add. I know EXACTLY what you are thinking right now. Does Shrimp Chips have issues with eating her own kind? I know. I was thinking the same thing. Do any fish really? They peck at each others dead bodies all the time in regular household aquariums. Fish are cannibalistic creatures by nature. That is why I have no problems eating them. Anyhoo, the rolls were not great. But the service, IMPECCABLE. The waitress exceeded my expectations so much, that I have decided to stalk her and eventually take her for my own. One day when she gets off work, I am going to follow her to her car, and... ask her for the time. Then run away. I'm smitten by womanly love feelings. FEEL MY WOMANLY LOVE WAITRESS!!!! All three stars are dedicated to this woman. Ok, 1 star is for cannibals. 2 stars for the waitress.

We went here on a Tuesday around 4:30. We ordered the chicken teriyaki & CA roll & tempura in a bento box & it was delicious! Also ordered some Sake off the happy hour menu along with some vegetable pot stickers that were super yummy. Would definitely go here again!

A good choice if you're craving raw fish right after getting off the exercise bike. I guess I was after the usual 20 minute workout. They took my sweaty ass coming out of 24 Hr. Fitness, so I guess a star for that. Actually, that's when I should have turned around and left. They did seem kind of unenthusiastic to seat us despite the high quality of my athletic gear... Anyway, this is a quirky place (not in the complimentary way). The servers give off a weird vibe and the decor is offbeat. Sushi = hella mediocre. I don't think I've ever been so unmoved by sushi. The rice was warm and fell apart easily. The fish, for both nigiri and rolls, was exceedingly bland. Other than the tai and amaebi, I felt like was eating air. Even the edamame was mediocre. And it's not cheap. Did I mention bland? On a positive note, at least I didn't barf.

I've been ordering their delivery for a couple of years. The quality has gone down and they've started charging for delivery, even though it says FREE. Be careful when you order, and check it when it gets to you. I had to wait another 45 minutes for them to re-deliver last night's wrong order.

Looks like a dive from the outside, but service is great, sushi is good, and prices are cheap. I would recommend for quick lunch during work, but not really the best place for dinner- if you want ambiance, that is. Your basic order, eat, and leave sushi place with smiling waiters.

I'm not a huge sushi aficionado. That being said, I love a good roll. Mikado is in my neighborhood, not very expensive and really delivers. 5 of us had a substantial meal for under $100... we had no booze (which is rare), so you'll have to factor that in. The decor is very interested. Comfortable. Great service. What we had that I loved: Seaweed salad - so good. A perfect dressing with just the right amount of toasted sesames. Spider roll - happy good times of crunchy stuff and yummy goodness. if I could ever recall what's in each roll, I might be able to explain it better. Crazy monkey - yum mm. I don't know what the purple sauce was on top, but it made my stomach purr. Rock and roll - very very good. Always a standard for me and this one was solid.

Same as you'll find sushi at any Chinese Hot-pot restaurant sushi buffet. So that it is 100% Chinese. I don't know how many times I edited about this counterfeit. When I started writing this, I tryed to be calm in the begining, but, I just can not take that place like this. Call themself Sushi? What a shame! You must be joking. It's not much different sushi at Super market. It's another jive ass roll only place. 100% Pseudo. 100% Amature. 100% No Pro Sushi Chef. Neta (fish) was not fresh, at all, also very small about half size of what it should be, Shari (rice) was mediocre. On the + side, Very good waitresses. All Asians. Nice manners and Fast. They are pros but not sushi-chef. Nice interior too.

When I go out and eat sushi, I try to stay away from bento boxes. Instead, I go ahead and try the actual sushi, something a Japanese retaurant should specialize in. The night me and some buddies went, there was a special on the Super White Tuna. We ordered that and fell in love with it. It was super soft, and fresh. We tried to order another plate, but were too late because they just sold out. The other sashimis were very fresh and extremely tasty. A must try if you are around the neighborhood. I highly recommend this place, and if you're going in with a larger crowd, I would advise calling in to reserve a table instead of waiting in long lines. The restaurant might not be the largest, but the service was is excellent. Ask for the waitress for their recommendation on sakes, they have an excellent selection. There was this one bottle we tried, it was called "Daiginjo". I would have to say that it was a tasty bottle of cold sake.

Although I live nearly a block away, it would have never crossed my mind to enter this nondescript Japanese restaurant, until my friend suggested we meet there. We share similar tastes for rolls with habanero chili slices on top with a drizzle of eel sauce. Since she had been there she suggested the hellboy roll. Yes, it was hella good. Their other rolls are decent, and although it isn't the freshest sushi around it is very affordable and hits the spot. I also like that it is low-key, so you can dine there solo- or meet up with a friend.

I only have ever ordered delivery from Mikado; so, I can't speak to the actual ambiance of the restaurant. However, I can say that the salmon sashimi dinner is always fresh, they have REALLY good fresh scallop sushi nigiri and they are extremely prompt in delivery. Not to mention, pretty dang cheap...

I'm giving Mikado Sushi 4 stars because I've passed it on my way home many times and it looked like some place I wouldn't bother to stop in. However, in a place like SF, you really can't think like that. My girlfriend and I went one Saturday night and it was fantastic. The food was delicious. The price was reasonable. The decor and music were fun. I can't put my finger on it, but the best way I can describe the sushi is to say that it has a really "smooth" quality. Everything just kind of melts in your mouth. (If I may coin what is likely a copyrighted term...) Also, not sure if Susy effing C. was our server, but I do recall the service being FANTASTIC on that saturday night. Young servers, all VERY friendly and accomodating. I took 2 friends back on the Monday following my first visit, earlier in the night. The service was not QUITE as good, but the food was still very delicious. Bonus points because one of my friends with us is a Sushi Snob who complains about most of the Sushi I take him to, and he was quite happy. *Also, they serve Dr. Pepper. This is nothing THAT amazing, but you don't find that on offer at most restaurants...

My guess is that this is the kind of place that is good for lunch break from work, but isn't worth the money or the trouble for a nice dinner. I stopped by last week for lunch, was seated and served promptly. I like the set-up of the restaraunt; although it's narrow I kinda like it when the sushi chef isn't the focal point of a Japanese restaurant. I ordered salmon nigiri, a tuna roll and a rainbow roll. The salmon nigiri was the best part of the meal- the tuna roll was underwhelming, with the size, quality of tuna and preparation being off the mark. The Rainbow roll included unagi, which was a first for me, but wasn't all that great because the quality of fish isn't high quality. In all, this is a good place for a quick bite, at a medium-to-low price. In fact, I'm considering a return visit today!

The Bad: I think it's a little wasteful how they use Tupperware like containers for their food to go. Literally, you can totally save money on Tupperware if you go to this place and order out and reuse their containers. The Good: Great little place. It's always packed there during lunch time so go early or take out/get delivery. Sushi isn't the best I've had but their service and fun atmosphere makes up for it. BTW: Their "Niku Don" is the shizzle!

i love this place especially their sushi -- power roll (spicy and crunchy! what more can you ask for?) plus any sushi with eel because the eel melts in your mouth. the place itself is pretty small but i like how its really comfy and the waitresses are super nice and tentative. the place tends to get busy during the night but you still dont have to wait long for your food. im not a big fan of sake bombs but my friends enjoy the alcohol and the prices arent that bad either.

Four-and-a-half, really. They seemed to good to be true (easy parking, moderate prices, usually available for a party of two), but when we finally took the plunge we were hooked. I'm a nigiri kind of guy, so here's my recs: Toro, Saba, Hirame, Maguro, and Hokki-Gai all above average. Albacore's ok, but, really, just go for the Toro. Hamachi has been less consistent- it always tastes fresh, but the cut is not always marbled. I trust them enough to eat their Uni, which is a testament to their freshness (but it's not always available). Unagi, Ika, Ebi, and Tako were great, but you can get that just about anywhere. Seaweed salad is worth every penny of $3.95. Bonus: they deliver for free on orders over $20. Bonus 2: they play techno, and have orange and yellow walls. I think they're the best I've found in the city so far (without paying an arm and a leg).

I give this place high ratings not because of the food or atmosphere. I give it high marks because for the most part, most Japanese restaurants are unreasonably expensive, especially sushi, and Mikado serves up competent food, pleasant atmosphere and great service all for reasonable prices. Been here several times and they are consistent. I wouldn't compare this place to higher end places, but just approach it with modest expectations and you'll be satisfied. The staff is always prompt, friendly and attentive. It's good eats!

You know those restaurants you go to where you don't really remember much about...well..this is one of them for me. Atmoshere is just kinda there... Food is...not bad...but nothing outstanding. service is...well, not really that good honestly. It's not because anyone is lazy, they are just super busy at lunch! I don't have huge qualms with asking for water or a check...so not a big deal on my part. I in fact sometimes like to be left to my own accord and get the check when I like. It's not like Blowfish Sushi where I have to walk over and refill my own water glass (once again, I don't mind doing this...). I'll go back here. Sushi is fresh and tasty and affordable. Bento box I wish had more non-fried options...even though I love fried food :)

Perfectly good and very easy with delicious rolls as a plus. I do recommend going in versus delivering out. There is a shrimp and walnut roll at this place that is worth going just for it. Try it - you may like it. The SFPD roll is a slice of heaven and whatever they have on the specials list is always a good bet. Great value place for the cost-concious.

-hey,i thought we're going to work out? -nah, lets go for sushi instead -uhhhhh.... OKAY! --------- that was pretty much verbatum- as my friends and i left the gym, hopped into the car and zipped down 16th street where we then proceeded to illegally park

Step in off the street and be transported to hip Japan. The decor is striking, the calm inviting, the sushi bar in the back of the room welcoming. Service is friendly, prompt, helpful, really nice folks. Large menus feature a wide variety of dishes, a wide array of Japanese cooking styles, as well as a great sushi list. The house specials were excellent. Several good sakes are served. Excellent prices to boot make this a sure return destination.

One of 2 sushi delivery places in SF that I know of. I usually get the Crazy Monkey and Barry rolls. For the appetizer, the tofu was perfectly fried and the dashi was in a separate container, so I could mix the combination for an unsoggy agedashi tofu dish. The menu is super saturated with tuna, hamachi, and shrimp tempura. When I get that late night sushi crave, this is the place I phone. That's pretty much it. Since I prefer more authenticity and varied seafood experience for Japanese dine-in, I don't think I would eat at the actual restaurant.

T-minus 2 hours to party. I was originally going order from Moshi Moshi, but they're closed for lunch on saturday, so I fire up Yelp and see what else there is for sushi in the area. I called them, having never been to the restaurant, and asked if I could order assorted sushi that would be enough for 15. The person on the phone helpfully suggested I look at the menu on the website and see what I wanted. I guess their website is out of date, because the Super Boat she told me to look for wasn't on the online menu. Oh well. I ordered the super boat and some shrimp tempura. They kindly added a big box of edamame and an order of california roll for free. Score! AND free delivery. Score again! And I could pay by credit card on the phone. Score 3x. Everything arrived exactly on time. They close on saturday from 3-4pm, I guess to prep for dinner, and I was worried the food would arrive while I was still out running errands. The california roll was ... not bad. The krabmeat was on the wet side, which I'm not a huge fan of, but it was well put together, the rice was flavorful, and I can't really complain. The edamame were good -- the right amount of salt and cooked to the point that they were easy to eat cold. I had a few pieces of tempura veggies which were done nicely. The vultures hanging out in my apartment (i.e., my guests) finished the rest of the tempura and all of the sushi before I could get to them, so I'll have to try the restaurant to taste for myself. Given the served-to-eaten time of approximately 7.8 seconds, I'm guessing the sushi was good. The super boat was the expected assortment of nigiri and the staple spicy tuna and california rolls. Sushi purists will probably look down on this restaurant, and I can't imagine it compares to the heavenly sushi I had in Tokyo, or to some of the storied, venerable sushi establishments dotting california, but my experience with Mikado was pretty damn good.

I love this place! I used to have lunch here every weekend when I volunteered at the SPCA around the corner. The kitties certainly appreciated my sushi breath. ;-) The Walnut Prawn Roll is a thing of beauty and deliciousness. I had one three hours ago and I'm already craving another. The Crazy Monkey is deliciously spicy, and the tempura'd rolls are always crunchy and fresh. I don't hop around the menu too much because I have my regular favorites, but I thoroughly recommend these two. My husband usually orders two salmon nigiri because he says the fish is so fresh. The waitstaff are generally young and sweet -- one recognized me today after not seeing me for a few months, which was nice! You may have to ask for your check, but the food always comes fast. Something that may also factor into your decision to eat here: This restaurant has the cleanest, coolest, most tranquil restroom I've ever seen. It's beautiful! I could live in it!

Typical Japanese restaurant found throughout the bay area. I frequent Mikado because the food and sushi are always good. However, everytime I go, the food portions in the bento boxes differ and the size of the sushi is never the same - sometimes the pieces are big, other times they're small.

Edible is all I have to say. Even when you factor in that they deliver, I wouldn't rate it higher. Rice overcooked and too sweet.

Decent. Very mediocre and adequately priced for the service. A good place to go for lunch when you're craving the texture of that raw fish, but don't want to go out with a decadent wallet stripping extravaganza. The fish was relatively fresh considering how affordable it was, but beyond that there isn't much to say. The staff was friendly and timely, I ordered a few roles, and a large Sashimi plate which they finished in under 15 minutes for pick up. Quality place to stop by if you're around the neighborhood and on a modest budget.

Mikado's got a special sushi roll with lychee inside! Don't remember the name, but it's some of the best sushi I've ever had. The lychee explodes with flavor and you really notice it towards the end of the chewing. From the outside, this place seems small but it's pretty spacious inside. Prices are what you'd expect at a sushi bar.

ok so this place has by far the best happy hour EVER. half off all drinks and appetizers. seriously, if you get a drink and order almost everything on the menu (app menu) and your bill still only comes out to $20. and your full. and you still have money to get drunk. when you aren't here for happy hour this place is still good, its not the best, but its not bad either. does the job and the wait staff always serves with a smile.

***3 3/4 STARS**** Emma, law school friend, and I tried this place Friday night for SUSHI HAPPY HOUR...yes people you heard right SUSHI HAPPY HOUR!!! For 3 large beers, gyoza, tempura app. (not on the happy menu), and approx. 5 rolls (i think) our tab came out to $28 dollars...YEAH, that's right a festivity of sushi and beer for under $30 in San Francisco...I would totally come back to this place for more happy hour...gotta give kudos to Emma for finding this place (and she's a recent Colorado import)...I recommend this place...

Love that they deliver, and quickly. Dont love the prices, the food was okay. Chicken katsu was yummy, miso soup was good but how can you mess that up. I got the crispy california roll thinking it would be tempura style...it was breaded and fried. Nothing too special but I would probably order from here again just because its so easy.

I can't speak highly enough of this place. I come from the Midwest where we don't really dare to eat any kind of raw fish, but Mikado has changed that for me. They provided great service, extremely reasonable pricing and tremendous value. If you are a real sushi/sashimi snob (I am not) then this place may not be for you. However, if you enjoy sub $10 bento boxes and great food, than you will want to check this one out. I can't justify going to really nice sushi restaurant's but could be persuaded easily to eat hear for lunch most days of the week.

WOW, from the previous review, zero to one star? I'm not judging or the know my sushi, but from what I tasted and ordered, I like what I eat. taste good, price is good, service is great. I give them four stars due to the fact I've been here 3 times and each time, I enjoyed my evening here. The previous review made me think if I know my sushi and I guess I don't because the food here is better than most places I've been to. I don't eat sushi 24/7 or been to Authentic SUSHI restaurants, but from what I've seen, people here like Mikado. They are usually full of customers and people always order to go. I will be back! That for sure. The service is top notch. I am a cheap Asian and from what I've seen, I finally tipped them $1 for their services. THANKS!

Personally, I'm only a fan of sushi bistros that have a large selection of special rolls. Bento boxes are a plus, but I come for the sushi. It helps when they don't skip on the quantity of each roll given when ordered either. Mikado didn't disappoint on either end, and while it's a bit on the pricey side, I still had a hard time choosing from their long range of special rolls. I will be coming back. I loved the atmosphere.

The shioyaki salmon was well-cooked. A lot of the time the salmon I get is overcooked, but this was perfect, and lightly seasoned. Salad dressing is good. My boyfriend ordered a sashimi plate and said you could tell it was frozen, so I wouldn't recommend it. I would say this is your average sushi joint.

Very bad service! I've ate here at least 10 times. I can't take it anymore, the food is ok, not great, but I continued to go, because the place looks clean and there is free parking across the street at Safeway. I no longer will give them my money for mediocre food.

  • トモ T.

I don't need to go back to this place. Usual bento boxes (choose 3 times from list of 12) which were poor quality and taste. No where close to authentic Japanese food. Sure, menu is priced low, but there are many places in SF where you can get a much better food at a good value. Whatever you do, stay away from their beef teriyaki as the quality is terrible. Their saba-fish was ok, but not good. Noodle was really bad.

  • Ranier B.

I ordered their seaweed salad to start and a rainbow roll. The service is fast and friendly. Considering the part of town this place is located in, it's pretty nice inside. The decor and ambiance is pleasing to the eye and the sushi bar is well kept.

Tasty, fresh, and pretty inexpensive. Lunch Bento Box ranges from 7- 10 dollars, depending on how many items you get. Dinner Bento- just a few dollars more. I usually get the Salmon and Maguro Sashimi- very fresh and decent portion. Ambiance is not so great: I could do without the sheet metal 'art' on the walls...

I'm surprised by all the not-so-hot reviews. I was wary of this place at first, being across the street from Petco and all. But I tried it and was pleasantly surprised. I've gotten take-out or delivery several times and I've never been disappointed. I usually order some of the rolls or appetizers on the specials board. Good quality. Well-executed flavor combos. Fine by me.

Delivery was bad. the tray comes all FLAT. Miso soup is so little, and the rice portion is small. I made a mistake on delivery order. When I got my food, I was surprised and I asked the driver but he didnt know. Restaurant called me later telling me that they thought the way I ordered was weird, but they were too busy, so they didnt call me to check, but they just processed the order. THANKS ALOT. I spent over $150 on the delivery order. I didnt know I was ordering 7 of the fish with rice, and 7 of the fish does not come with rice. I asked for 14 chopsticks. Can't you guess I have 14 people wanting to eat dinner?? what am I gonna do with no rice and just a broiled fish???

Is this the best sushi place in the city? No. It's not even the best sushi place in the mission. But if you don't want to deal with the ridiculous hipsters and ridiculous prices of blowfish... this is your place. The happy hour deals are awesome... and the spinach appetizer with the peanut sauce is one of my favorite foods ever.

have been here many times before but it really has gone down in quality.. terriyaki sauce was overly sweet, tempura was burnt and miso was far too thick.. all in all a disaster dinner. waiter could not have cared less and food service was not harmonious wtth different people at the table getting served at different times. will not bother to ever return...

I'm used to eating at Kitaro/Kiki. So this was a nice change, I come here while I get my dog groomed at Petco across the street. The combo is cheap for up to 3 options. the california roll was good. and they were cool about me bringing my dog in too.

I'm a regular there and don't understand all of the vitriol posted about them. It's a small hole in the wall with a friendly, attentive waitstaff and reasonably priced, very good sushi/sashimi/etc. If you want to feel hip and authentic, you can go down the block about a half-mile and drop $100 more at Blowfish with little improvement in quality (although it sure looks purty). I especially dig the spicy tuna and that huge cone-shaped thing. Well recommended.

Mikado use to be my lazy, don't want to move off the couch, calling in for delivery Japanese restaurant. The food is not great, it never was. But as we all know, when you are hungry or intoxicated, you can eat just about anything. And you'll do it even if it costs you a few awk-weird, bright eyed glances from the delivery guy. The delivery guy had a not so secret crush on me that was slightly disturbing. Not just because he was the delivery guy, but the fact that he had no tact. He would try and stay to chat longer than necessary as he dreamingly leaned with one hand firmly against my front door. I never fished for my credit card as fast as I would when he'd come by. I started to wonder if the quasi decent food, the long wait and the creepy delivery guy was all worth it. And then I opened my sashimi to find ice frosted around the salmon and decided it was time to say 'sayonara' to Mikado, get off the couch and eat something better.

Great deals at happy hour, and all around, more than decent sushi. It's great that they deliver because i am a sushi addict.... clinically diagnosed. If you want the best sushi in town, there are better places, but often they are overpriced due to good reviews. This place has exactly what you need for a fair price and good service on top of it.

This is my secret place when I don't want to go all the way to J-town for down home sushi. The place itself is nothing to speak of, so I would advise people just to do a take out. They are really fast - 15 minutes max. after you call in. Try the 3 item bento. Good value, enough for 2 to share.

This place bugs me out!...The food is okay, and your better off ordering in at home. They do deliver pretty quickly and its worth the wait, cause when you go there , they don't give a rats tail about you. I went there the other day and the lady just flung my food in front of me. I asked for extra sauce and got quite the look from her. Its not like there are a million tables to tend to. So in short, the foods okay but the service sucks!..there are much better places , near by!

Update: I got such an upset stomach the day after ordering from Mikado that I had to stay home from work. I can't be sure that the sushi is the reason I got sick, but I can guarantee that I will not be eating my leftovers and will not order from here again just in case. **(Previous Review): I ordered delivery tonight off of GrubHub (love the online ordering)... yeah it makes me seem lazy and antisocial, but hey everybody has their moods. :) The estimated delivery time was 70 minutes, but not even 20 minutes later I was meeting the very courteous delivery driver. Spent over $25 and got free edamame. Nice, but they were cold. Ahh I guess beggers can't be choosers. Tasty Miso soup; some of the rolls didn't stay together that well (-*Minus a star) but they hit the spot. Really liked the Crunch California Roll and the tempura shrimp roll with cucumber. The Crazy Monkey Roll was a weird combination of textures, but I liked the kick from the sauce. All in all, not half bad.

I used to come here for my lunch break, food is mediocre and prices are way too high. Dragon roll+Hamachi maki was over 15 bucks after tax and tip, RIDICULOUS since the Dragon roll was decent at best and the Hamachi wasn't even fresh. The bentos give you an incredibly small amount of food and can also hit $15+ depending on whether you want 2 items or 3. Service was pretty good but doesn't make up for the price of decent at best food.

I really should have been the FIRST to review this restaurant since I spotted it and then had to nearly drag little Ms. Oksana kicking and screaming in order to try it out ! Unfortunately she being the more diligent Yelper beat me to the punch. Anyway as for the restaurant itself, the meal and service were really good. The maguro sashimi was fresh and tasty and I the roll I can't remember the name of was also very good. It was basically a Philadelphia roll with tomato on it, interesting and tasty! There are several unique rolls on the menu that I look forward to going back to try. It's also fairly reasonably priced if you can believe it.

I went to this sushi place after work simply because it's near my house. The service is always friendly and I loved that it's never hard to get a table. The sushi is always tasty; I've never had a bad roll there. I've read a few bad reviews and was happy to say that I had no idea what they're talking about. I was so excited when they started DELIVERING right to my door! It's not that easy to find sushi delivery places. Last week I decided to get something delivered, so I used their incredibly easy-to-use website to order right online. The food was delivered in a timely manner, and I can see why. They not only forgot the edamame that I was supposed to get free with my order, they made their rainbow roll half its usual size so that it could be crammed into the tiny to-go box they used. Well, if they want to save money in this economy, that wasn't the way to do it. I wrote them an email explaining my dissatisfaction and they didn't even write back. Well, I'll be giving my money to someone else from now on. Screwing customers by making your orders smaller and charging the same price isn't going to win you any prizes in this town, Mikado.

My sales rep used to take me here for lunch every time he comes to visit me. We alway have a good time and the sushi is wonderful.

They have a great sake selection and great sushi - the bento boxes are nice too. My personal favorite is the paper mache upside-down mushroom hanging from the ceiling. It kind of reminds me of the 90's when raves were popular. The servers are really nice too and they have a candy dish at the front with a nice array of mints - a&w candies.

I stopped in here after a long weekend of party here and party there starving and brain dead. The staff was friendly, fast and asian cute. They had salmon skin rolls which were by far the best I've had in the city perfectly crunchy with just enough green onions and spicy sauce. I also tried the lovers roll which was excellent. My counter part tried the walnut prawn something or other roll it was good but a little too much for me plus I hate walnuts. The SFPD roll was less than what it claimed but hey it is named after the pigs so what did I really expect? Everything was hot that was supposed to be which at other places I've noticed is a real challenge....luke warm miso soup and green tea really sucks. The decor was a bit strange (large mushrooms hanging upside-down from the ceiling) but it was chill and relaxing for the most part. The best part is that they deliver...so next time Im brain dead and wishing a cute asian sushi fairy would appear at my door with food for my mouth-hole I can call them..... and one will appear.

We were headed for the Chinese restaurant next door until my girl said how about Japanese instead. Sounded good to me. Glad it went that way because the food was damn good. Can't tell you what the fish is like since I'm a vegie, but I loved the spicy tempura edamame and the veg sushi--avocado maki, oshinko maki, sweet potato maki. Plus it was happy hour, so the avocado & sweet potato maki were only $2 per order. The hiya yakko was simple but good. The gomae was odd though. It was drowning in a heavy peanut sauce instead of a little sesame sauce. Weird. Won't be getting that dish again. Liked everything else though. Nice space, too.

mikado sushi was totally yummy and totally un-crowded on a saturday night. their specialty rolls are delicious -- i got an asparagus roll wrapped in rice paper, and a fried thing that i can't remember the name of. both were delightful. try this place out if you want decently priced, delicious sushi at a mellow spot (never mind the loud mainstream radio rock -- it's ok, i forgive them).

Delivery is amazing, always dependable for that sushi craving. The fish is pretty good if you're just looking for a quick fix. They never have toro when I ask for it (almost every time). The only time I dined at the restaurant, the entire place was empty, kind of gave me the creeps.

I eat here a lot for lunch, as it is right by my work. It's good. I always get the bento box with some dumplings and some rolls. Never mind-blowing, always tasty.

This place is pretty good. I guess I haven't been totally wowed, but I haven't had a bad experience at all. If I had to choose, I would much rather go to Blowfish, but Mikado is reasonably priced and the fish is pretty fresh. Although the last take-out order I got from here, the fish didn't seem as fresh and crisp as before. But I still ate it and it tasted good. :) The service is always great when we go and the food is decent.

I only sit at the sushi bar and the service has been very responsive. The guys are cool and seem pretty sincere in their recommendations. I always hook them up with at least a half-pint of Sapporo or like beverage and they hook it up in return. Try a spicy scallop hand roll and then follow it with a roll wrapped in thin cucumber instead of rice. Booya!

The food made me sick. I wasn't sure the first time I went that it was the sushi but after the second time I am sure that their sushi made me sick. the cooked food was ok but just ok. I should have know that this place was bad since every time I went by it was empty. even though it was a friday when we went the first time, the was only two other tables of people. the service was non-existant and the decor cheap and tacky but it was the food that made me so very very sick.

i love this place! its a bit far from my house but its right next to my work so i get it every now and then. they have EVERY kind of japanese food and sushi you could want! everything is properly priced and very fresh. excellent choices and fast delivery!

i can't comment on the food, because it never arrived. i called repeatedly and was told that the driver was on his way, would be there any minute, etc. i had to get a little loud on the phone to make someone admit that my food was never prepared and wasn't right around the corner. the icing was when i was told that i wouldn't be charged. making a mistake is fine, we all do it and some of us have no issue owning it. had they told me the first time i called that my order wasn't being prepared i would have just moved on. i was ravenous and enraged by the time i figured out i was screwed.

Loved it! had a great time, nice atmosphere. Especially that asian waitress, susy is a big flirt and she has a nice rack.

I like this place for the bento box combos -- good selection of items to choose from at a nice price. I've enjoyed the sushi here, but if I wanted a top-notch experience in a trendy locale, I would probably go down the street to Blowfish. This place is more neighborhood-y -- never too crowded and the service is usually good.

A friend of mine mentioned Mikado because its close to my house. Doesnt look like the most impressive place from the outside, but it is now officially my favorite sushi place in the city. the fact that its right by my is a bonus! sushi chefs are great with innovative rolls. never too crowded so theres always been a seat at the bar. If you want a simple place with great sushi and avoid the rediculous prices at the "trendy" sushi spots in the city, this cant be beat!

This is my favorite place for dine at home sushi. Seriously. You make a phone call, hang up, wait, and sushi arrives at your door step. And it doesn't suck! I mean, how can you beat that? It's better priced than the monkey place that delivers.

This place was surprisingly good. We ordered delivery for lunch at work, and everything was really well seasoned, well spiced, + well prepared. The fact that they deliver is so great, but be warned, delivery was reeeaaaallll slow. It took almost 2 hours for us to get our food.

Eh, I can't complain. A group from work made some reservations for lunch for here (mainly b/c it's down the street and there's not a lot of dec restaurants in the area). I liked it. It wasn't "mind blowingly good" sushi, but it tasted good enough for me. I had the Bento Lunch Box with chicken & beef teriyaki and some california rolls (mainly because I was too lazy to think of something less generic). But you know what, it tasted pretty damn swell I tellz ya. Overall, prices & food are decent but the atmosphere is a little cramped, which pretty much describes every Japanese restaurant...

This is my favorite cheap sushi in SF. Good service, good fish, great prices. Filled our tummys last night for $30 with two excellent bento boxes. This'll be my new go-to sushi spot.

I have eaten at the Mikado in San Rafael quite a few times now and at each visit the quality of the sushi has been excellent. Not only is the sushi delicious the presentation of the art forms they create with the sushi are lovely. A little pricey for the portions served.

Frequent for lunch. I like the oyako don (rice + chicken cooked w/ some stuff). The sushi is OK. I'm just a big oyako don fan for some reason. Nothing special otherwise, and the prices are ok.

This place isn't stellar, but it's not horrible either. They have a pretty extensive lunch menu, but I always get the same thing (salmon sashimi); it is always fresh and so far has never tasted or smelled "ocean-y" (if you've had bad sushi, you know the smell/taste I am talking about). The staff are fast and friendly, and the prices are very reasonable - this is a good place to eat lunch if you don't mind spending $10+.

Great food at a reasonable rate. Plus it's in my hood. If you go check the Sake nigiri, Crazy Monkey, and a Dynamite roll. They also have some bomb root beer candies right by the door. You know those A&W ones?

meh sushi. it tasted like what you get at college sushi bars in cleveland. you could get much fresher fish and less sloppy rolls at just about any similarly priced establishment in the city.

I've never actually dined at this place but the delivery is about as good as you can get for delivered sushi. It's usually mostly fresh and they got a decent variety of rolls etc. The hot food is also decent but nothing memorable. However, if you are feeling like a lazy ass and want someone to bring sushi to your door, can't go wrong here.

It is sad really I used to go there often and was extactic to find a sushi place that delivers plus the waitresses are all cute and nice but nothing is worse than old fish and I don't care how cute and nice your waitress is you serve up some crap like that and i won't be comming back ok maybe I'll try it again one time but then you serve the same crap again and ge the order wrong just serving whatever fish happend to be laying around. What happened? They used to be pretty good although the toro was allways stringy and weird. thumbs down.

Pretty good for the neighborhood. OK prices on Bento Box, which is what we get everytime we go to lunch here since it's the 'economical way to go'. Sushi is nothing to write home about, teriyaki is standard. Nice staff, great, big booths.

Good fresh food.. I love the bento box at lunchtime. You can pick 2 or 3 items from a list and the food is always top quality and flavorful. The sushi bar is nice and always fresh. Great place for lunch.

I stumbled into this place with a friend and I was pleasantly surprised on how nice the restaurant was for a small hole in the wall. I was also impressed by the friendly service. I'm not a sushi expert but really liked the bento box which I had with a spicy tuna roll and CA roll. It hit the spot, it wasn't crowded and the price was reasonable --- I'm going back!

Their food is average, but considering as a lunch place, it's pretty good in the neighborhood. I usually ordered their rolls, yum~
